[[Son of Rock]] is the traditional spring/summer instructional rock climbing trip. The rock is finally dry (hopefully), the snow is less than ideal, and the days are long. The plan is to have several stations set up in the vicinity of the Smoke Bluffs in Squamish with 'instructors' teaching a variety of climbing skills. There will be at least one (but most likely two) instructors at each station. All ability levels are welcome and no climbing experience is necessary. There will be 4 different climbing courses: 1: absolute beginner, 2: building top-rope systems off of bolts and/or trees, 3: sport lead climbing (leading on bolt-protected routes), and 4: trad climbing (leading on removable protection).

Group sizes will be determined by instructor availability.

The VOC used to have massive ski camps at Sphinx Bay in the spring, after exams. These days, we never seem to know if the lake is still frozen in May, so I suggest we check it out during February reading week. The idea is for folks to self-organize into smaller, self-sufficient groups and sort out their own timing, transportation and group gear logistics, using the VOC wiki, much in the way we do New Year's at Waddington Hut. So there is no overriding central organizer.  Rather, we will use the wiki to line up groups and dates, and to figure out who's sleeping in the hut and who's bringing at tent.

Most of the terrain above the hut is glaciated and alpine: good avalanche terrain management, companion rescue,  glacier travel and crevasse rescue are mandatory pre-requisites for this trip. This is not a beginner-friendly affair, unless you can convince more experienced folks to take you along in their group!
