Upcoming Trips 1) Gulf Islands 2) Survival Trip 3) Smith Rocks 4) CAA Avalanche Workshop 2006 5) Winter Social V. Trip Reports 1) Skaha ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Letter From the Editor This is issue "Lucky 13". I'm not superstitious, but sometimes it doesn't hurt. Climbing, mountaineering and skiing are good reasons to collect as much luck as one can. However, if you had an experience where you ran out of luck, would be dead if you did run out of luck, or just had the luck to experience something great, please write it down and send it to Kaja for this years VOC journal. We would all love to read about it. Submissions from anybody are welcome and the only criterion is that it is about the outdoors, happened this year, and has been spell checked. Please send any articles to Kaja atbefore spring, but the sooner the better. II. Slide Shows When: Nov 1, @ 7pm Where: Clubroom Boris will be presenting tonight, there will be some amazing pictures. Check the wiki (http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Slide_shows). III) Work Hikes 1) Still need that workhike to rent gear? Evan needs some help Wiki-izing the Journals. It would involve just a few hours work typing up 2 journal's table of contents and index. Plus it's fun to read the old journals! Contact Evan (ecmorris@gmail.com). 2) Helping the gear master sort gear - Wednesday from 9-5 (only 90minutes of your time). Contact James Painter @ james_painter@hotmail.com if you would like to help, or just show up during the specified times. 3) Route Cleaning Jeff wants to clean a 5.7 multi-pitch on the Chief. He has looked into what is required and is now starting the project. The climb is 400m and is called "Crap Crags" (the name is a strong suggestion of why it needs to be cleaned). It would be really cool to have a 5.7 climb that went from the bottom to the top of the Chief. He will be working on this project this weekend, so if you want to help contact Jeff @ IV) Upcoming Trips 1) Gulf Islands When: Nov 3-6 Where: Ocean close to Vancouver Contact: Andrew Pare (a_pare@hotmail.com) Message Board: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=19515&t=19515 2) Survival Trip When: This weekend Where: BC Message Board: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=19379&t=19379 Are you too poor to buy all of that expensive camping gear, but still want to go camping? Well, this trip is for you! Get back to the basics with some no frill, spending time in the forest. This trip will be VOC journal worthy. Pre-trip meeting tonight in the club room @ 5:30. 3) Smith Rocks When: Nov 10-13 Where: Oregon somewhere Contact: Kaja (ksadowsk@interchange.ubc.ca) Wiki: http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Smith_Rock This trip has many people going. I can't believe that there are so many hard climbers willing to make the drive. There will be a pre-trip meeting Nov 7 @ 7pm in the club room. A road trip this large can not help but be fun. 4) CAA Avalanche Workshop 2006 When: Nov 25 Where: Whistler Secondary School, 8000 Alpine Way Whistler Wiki: http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/CAA_Avalanche_Workshop_2006 Sandra's says that it is one of the most useful avi workshops that she has taken. I'd believe her. There will be a true avalanche course to be held the first weekend of December (2-3) with a dry portion on the night of Nov 30. I will post more about this when I get the details. 5) Winter Social When: December 1st (Friday) Where: Sub party room There will be a speaker, probably free food (not confirmed), music and a SAGM (semi-annual general meeting). V. Trip Reports 1) Skaha Weather was great on Saturday where many of us climbed until dark. There were still people climbing with headlamps when we were walking out. The pot luck was fun, great food that kept appearing as quickly as it disappeared. The weather held that night until most of us were asleep. We all woke to a crisp white landscape. It was actually quite dry on Sunday minus the melting snow, the wind and the cold temperatures. Most people drank more coffee than climbed on Sunday, but some went hiking, splunking, and a few brave souls went climbing (which would have been good in the afternoon had we stayed). Hope everyone made it back safely. Long term forecast 0 - Reality 1000000001 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote of the Week: "To qualify for mountain rescue work, you have to pass our test. The doctor holds a flashlight to your ear. If he can see light coming out the other one, you qualify."
