Awesome pictures and report on the message board: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=2147&t=2147 2) Tele School Tele school was this past Saturday and it went well! I think everyone was making great improvements. Some people who had never skied before were definately in better control at the end of the day :) Thanks to the instructors and organizers. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=2266&t=2266 3) Norske Gili, Piotr and Phillip made a possible first ski ascent of Norske (in Manning Park) this weekend. Of course, they were able to fit in some nighttime dense tree disaster skiing too. Great TR: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=2265&t=2265 4) Garibaldi Lake/Sphinx Hut The lake is confirmed frozen by a VOC party who visited the hut last weekend. They even skied the barrier on the way out. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=2141&t=2141 http://gallery.jbedard.ca/2008/01_garibaldi/ 5) Brew Hut Since tele school was so easy for them, a bunch of people headed up to the Brew Hut afterwards (yes, in the dark). TR: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=2214&t=2214 6) Skiing to school Making use of the plentiful Vancouver snow, Natalie succeeded in skiing to school yesterday: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=34629&t=34629 II. Upcoming Events and Trips 1) Introduction to Backcountry Skiing, Feb. 2-3 Our pre-trip meeting is TONIGHT in the clubroom at 6pm. The trip is full though, so if you aren't signed up already, don' worry about it. If you can't make the meeting, you'll need to organize your ride for yourself. Send me questions or post them on the board. I'm even considering changing locations for group 1, stay tuned. http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Intro_to_Backcountry_Skiing_2008 http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=1934&t=1934 2) Slide Show: Wednesday Jan 30: Craig Alfredson Cycling, diving and climbing in Cuba That's TONIGHT, 7pm, clubroom. http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Slide_shows 3) Midnight Clamming Extravaganza, Feb. 9-10 Jeff has organized a clam gathering expedition. Unfortunately it is also full (there is a limit to avoid decimating the entire clam population in a small area). However, you can still come and eat the clams! You need to sign up on the wiki to make sure there is enough food prepared though. http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Midnight_Clamming_Extravaganza 4) Introduction to Ice Climbing, Feb. 9-10 The VOC is running an instructional ice climbing trip. Unfortunately it is full already. If you are interested, head over to the wiki page and add your name to the waiting list. http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Intro_to_Ice_Climbing_2008 III. VOCJ 50 Only twelve days left to get your article in to this year's VOCJ! A few articles have been trickling in, but we'll need more submissions from more people to get a good representation of this year's members and their activities. Don't miss this opportunity to have your epic immortalized in print. If you'd like to write something but don't know what, the editors are looking for someone to write about Skaha access, the fight for Phelix Creek, and Winter Longhike, among other topics. See the wiki page for a full list. http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/VOCJ50 All articles are due to Jeff Mottershead no later than Monday, January 11. Be sure to include a title for your submission and photos with full captions and credits. IV. Photo Competition The VOC is running a photo competition again this year!
