UPCOMING TRIPS

SMITH ROCK, OREGON
Another VOC trip, the annual pilgrimage down to Smith Rock, will be around the weekend of Nov 12-13. The rainy West Coast weather precludes most local outdoor climbing so if you have the need to climb dry rock, this is the trip for you. Top-ropeable climbs are limited in number as most formations are more than 1/2 rope length high. However there are numerous quality bolted and traditionally protected climbs at easy grades for the beginner lead climber. See the wiki section of the website (under annual trips) for details.
The trip logistics are being hammered out, with a pre-trip meeting shortly. Keep an eye out for the latest.

CLUB NEWS

VOC CLIMBING WALL
Tuesday night climbing sessions have been sporadic lately due to the fickleness of the UBC Film Society. The schedule for November is not yet available; see Nick Waber’s (Climbing Wall Coordinator) post on the message board.
When you use the wall: if you need gear, get it from the QM's during regular hours (lunch time). And bring your membership card (if you were not given one when you purchased your membership, come by the clubroom during regular hours and get it). Lastly, bring $5 for your year climbing wall membership. NO CLIMBING WITHOUT A MEMBERSHIP!!!

BREW HUT REBUILDING COMMITTEE MEETING
From Jean-Philippe Mercier (VOC Special Projects Exec):
I am going to hold a meeting focusing on the design of the Brew Hut next
Monday Nov 8 at noon in the club room. This will be the right time to discuss
and to take important decisions concerning the shape of the hut.
Everybody concern by the design should attend this meeting.

TRIP REPORTS

MT.STRACHAN, NORTH SHORE MOUNTAINS

The hike went very well. We made it to the top, no one got hurt and we had a pile of fun along the way. The way up was wet, which wasn't a surprise considering the amount of rain we got the night before. The weather at the top of Strachan was definitely blizzard like, making it difficult to find where the trail down began. Because of this we decided to hike/slide down the ski trails rather than try to find the top of the trail down to Strachan meadows. We ended up being down by noon and still wanting to hike some more. We then split up, some hiking up Black Mountain, and my vehicle heading to Lynn Headwaters where we hiked the Lynn Peak trail which lead us to a magnificent view of the city.

ACC MEMBERSHIPS
The Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) is once again offering free membership to student VOC members. We will announce when the cards are available for pick up in the Clubroom.
If you’re wondering just what an ACC membership entails, here’s a message from Antje Wahl, VOC rep from the ACC:
In the past 2 years the VOC-ACC partnership has consisted of
- joint ski trips (Spearhead Traverse)
- joint slide shows on campus
- discount rate for VOCers in ACC workshops
- ACC membership for all VOC student members
CYPRESS MOUNTAIN DISCOUNT PASSES
Antje Wahl submitted the forms this weekend. Note that you will NOT receive a letter from Cypress; you can go to any Cypress Mountain booth AFTER NOVEMBER 15 to pick up your pass. Just give them your name and you will be issued your pass on the spot. Cypress has booths at Pacific Centre Mall, Park Royal Mall and Metropolis/Metrotown (check mall websites for exact location) or you can get the pass on Cypress Mountain on your first ski day/night.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - NOVEMBER 7TH
Greetings! We hope this message is useful, and encourage readers to share, post and forward it. Our apologies if it is unwanted! Let us know, and we'll remove you from our list. Also, apologies if it is a duplicate. The message contains news about:
A. The Access Society's Annual General Meeting, on November 7th in Squamish.
B. Call for new Directors.
C. A Nanaimo Adopt-a-Crag event on November 27th & 28th.
A. Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting will be in Squamish on Sunday November 7th at 5:00 P.M. Details:
• Location - Howe Sound Inn & Brewing Company (a.k.a. Brew Pub), Garibaldi Room.
• Refreshments - Tea, coffee and juice will be provided. Food and other refreshments can be purchased.
• Draw prizes - From Mountain Equipment Co-op, Arc'Teryx, the Edge Indoor Climbing Centre, Gordie Smaill, Gregory Packs, the Access Fund, and others. You must be a current member to be eligible for draw prizes, but you can renew your membership, or join, at the door.
• Entertainment - Randy Morris, from Simon Fraser University, will present preliminary results from the socioeconomic study of climbing in the Squamish area. We'll also have another climber/speaker, to be announced.
• Who can attend - All Access Society members and supporters, and all those interested in the Access Society's mission and work, are welcome to attend. (Members only can vote.)
• Agenda - Minutes, area reports, directors' report, financial statements, elections, general discussion and planning.
Copies of the 2003-04 financial statements, minutes from the last AGM, and agendas, will be available at the door. 4-5 of the current directors plan to be present. The meeting will likely last about two hours - you should be able to go hiking or climbing for the day, get to the meeting on time, and still get home at a reasonable hour, regardless where you live. The AGM rotates between Penticton, Squamish, and Vancouver, and next year's will be in Vancouver.
B. Directors Needed
The Access Society needs some enthusiastic and knowledgeable new directors. We have between seven and eleven directors, from around B.C. No more than two from any region, or three from the lower mainland - geographic/gender/age/climbing interest balance is important. Our current directors:
Term ending 2004: Dan Mack (Nelson), Anders Ourom (Vancouver), Brock Wilson (Vancouver).
Term ending 2005: Allen Agopsowicz (Victoria), Colin Dionne (Powell River), Lisa Rae (Sechelt), Sheilagh Seaton (Summerland), Greg Sorensen (Nanaimo), Graeme Taylor (Squamish).
Jesse Brown (Squamish) and Audrey Perry (Kaleden) stepped down during the year, and we thank them for all their efforts. Graeme Taylor will be stepping down at the AGM, and possibly other directors also.
We need several willing new directors, particularly one or two from the Sea-to-Sky region. Desirable attributes are:
• Access Society member, or willing to join.
• Energetic, responsible, informed.
• Committed to promoting the Access Society and its work, getting climbers in your area organized as needed, and taking the initiative with regard to access issues and organization.
• Willingness to take on some administrative responsibilities.
• Able to participate in occasional phone meetings, twice-yearly in-person meetings, and regular phone calls and e-mail.

C. Nanaimo Adopt-a-Crag
There'll be an Adopt-a-Crag at Sunny Side of the Nanaimo River on November 27th & 28th. Details:
• Goals - Thorough clean up and trail building at Cable Car Wall, the entrance area.
• Tools - Bring any hand tools you have, as well as appropriate clothing, footwear, food, and drink.
• Draw prizes - Local stores and businesses have provided many, and the Access Society will add to them.
• Organizing meetings - There will be planning meetings at the Romper Room in Nanaimo on Tuesday October 26th and Thursday 28th, starting at 7:00 P.M. (5385B Boban Drive, (250) 752-7625).
