Hopefully everyone had a good Christmas Break. If you’re wondering what to do this semester, check out the trip agenda on the wiki. Lots of fun trips are in the planning.

I. Upcoming Events and Trips

1) Working and Travelling in Africa Slideshow, Jan 14
Susie Dain-Owens will be presenting music, pictures and stories from her experience in Africa from this past year. 7:00pm Wed January 14th.

2) Matthew's Gnarfest Phelix Hut Birthday, Jan 17-18
Everyone is welcome, but if your experience is limited, you'll need to make sure you are teamed up with someone who will look after you.

3)Tele School 2009, Jan 24
Do you want to learn to telemark ski? Tele School is scheduled for January 24th, 2009 at Mt. Seymour Resort. Sign-up is now open on the wiki for both students and instructors, but spots are filling up fast. If you have any questions, please contact Karolina Hanula (Karolina.hanula@gmail.com.)

4) Meghan's Powfest Burton Hut, Jan 24-25
I want to escape the city and go skiing. I have never been to the Burton Hut, so I thought of giving it a try. This is a tentative location though because the lake may not be frozen yet. If it is not frozen, there is a huge detour that needs to be done. If the temperatures warm then we will go to another hut to be decided. Also I was inspired recently to have fondue. So there will be a cheese and chocolate fondue! This is an informal trip and no instruction will be offered. You need to have avalanche awarness and it know how to ski/snowboard or maybe snowshoe (if you are fast).

5) Girls just a wanna have fun, Jan 31- Feb 1
If you are a girl in the VOC, you have probably like I been sitting in a car full of guys driving up the sea to sky listening to them talking about tools and cars all the way. And it is not that I don't like the company of guys, but miter saws and power drills just doesn't do it for me. Therefor I think it is time that the VOC celebrate the female sex. It is time to include the ladies and exclude the guys. It is time for cutting soft beautiful curves in the powder. It is time for hot chocolate with baileys. It is time for the VOC's first (but hopefully not last) girls only trip.
This is a beginner friendly trip, although it is recommended that you are in reasonable shape as it is a long way in to the hut.

6) Non-Discriminatory Trip, Jan 31 – Feb 1
If you are in the VOC, and like to ski, then probably, like me, you care more about how good the skiing is than the gender of your pow-shredding compadres. It is not that I don't like the company of just girls, sometimes, and just guys, other times, often both (in different ways) but really, in the end it's all about the gnar. Therefore I think it is time that the VOC celebrate skiing, again. Nothing new there then. It is, however, time to include everyone, across the entire spectrum of gender and sexuality, who isn't going on the girls-only trips this weekend. It is time for cutting soft beautiful curves in the powder. Or face-planting with skis exploding everywhere, if that's what you're into. It's all good with me. It is time for hot chocolate and Baileys, fine single-malt and desert potlucks. It is time for singing meatloaf on the way to the trailhead with both low and high voices. It is time for the VOC's first (but hopefully not last) officially declared beginner-friendly, gender-neutral, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer and intersex-positive trip. Hell, this trip is so non-judgmental you can even AT and nobody will make fun. Maybe.
This is a beginner friendly trip, although it is recommended that you are in reasonable shape as it is a reasonable way in to the hut.

II. Ms. Manners

This week’s question concerns the VOC Journal.

Dear Ms. Manners,

I recently heard that the VOC Journal is looking for contributions from VOC members. Being capable of writing in English and having had a few fun trips, I thought I’d contribute an article. But then I heard this year’s editor is an Honours English major. I barely dragged myself through first year English. Do I have to write an article with a title on the order of “The Mental State Implications of Alpine Skiing from a Baldwinian Route Viewpoint in terms of a contextual Telemarking socio-psycho construct?” Or will something along the lines of “See Me Ski” do?

On the side, I heard English majors bite. Should I contribute anonymously?
