VOCene #11 - June 28, 2007 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- In this VOCene: I. Trip Reports 1) Europa 2) Phelix Creek Bushwacking 3) FMCBC AGM II. Upcoming Events and Trips 1) Climbing in the USA on Canada Day 2) Squamish-Cheakamus Divide Ski Traverse ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Trip Reports 1) Europa Jeff visited Europa again last weekend for some more cleaning action. He has acquired two wire ropes for use with the chain puller, and decided that the best idea would be to jug up the first pitch with 200 lbs of gear. Seems that didn't go so well, but eventually he did get the "ropes" up there. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=28335&t=28335 2) Phelix Trail Bushwack Roland + co. plus Scott N., Steve, Eric, Jordan (and others?) went up to Phelix Creek. They started by fixing the rockslide at 0.5km. It is now passable by high clearance 4WD vehicles. They drove almost to the end of the road and bushwacked up the trail, marking wet areas so they can be avoided when the trails is built. Still lots of snow up at the lake. Please don't remove the flagging! http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=28024&t=28024 3) FMCBC AGM Sandra, Tim, Christian C. and Natalie went to Nelson for the FMCBC AGM (Federation of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia Annual General Meeting). Here is Natalie's trip report: Tim, Sandra, Champagne and myself drove out to Nelson to the world of acronyms this weekend. Yes, as a VOC member you too are a member of the Federation of Mountains clubs BC and the four of us went to represent our peers among the other clubs with membership more than twice our age. As your FMC rep I thought it would probably be nice to give you an overview of the general proceeding. The federation acts as the unified voice of twenty or so mountain clubs in BC, acting on behalf of the clubs in response to the government on issues surrounding conservation, trail maintanence and public education. Besides the normal agenda of reviewing and approving the budget and board, we touched on risk management and liability (thankfully the VOC is covered by the AMS, hence the disclaimer about dying potential on the heading of the message board every time you log on). We also discussed the reorganization of the federation to streamline the response time for dealing with conservation issues that come up in each region. Not that it was all about official buisness and proceedings... In Tim's words the ride over was 'long enough to get drunk and sober by the time you arrive'. The four of us consumed more than our fair share of okanaagen cherries, got in a decent trail run, a freakishly cold swim (in my humble opnion),a morning yoga session, a certain frisbee collision with a wood pile, and a lovely wildflower hike. Indeed. A great weekend to be sure. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=28309&t=28309 http://www.ubc-voc.com/gallery/v/christian_champagne/FCMBC+AGM/ II. Upcoming Events and Trips 1) Climbing in the USA on Canada Day A group is organizing a trip to Leavenworth and Index in Washington state. For more information see the message board: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=28365&t=28365 2) Squamish-Cheakamus Divide Ski Traverse Evan is organizing a Squamish-Cheakamus divide traverse and is looking for more participants. See the message board for more details and requirements. If the traverse fails to occur, it looks like they might go skiing/scrambling in the Semaphore lakes area. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=28398&t=28398 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTIONS to the VOCene are welcome.
