Trip Reports 1) Castle Towers In an attempt to revive the famous RABSA events of last summer, Chris Petrus led an intrepid group up Gentian Ridge. The weather didn't cooperate, so they didn't get up Castle Towers itself. They reported copious amounts of snow. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=28576&t=28576 http://www.ubc-voc.com/gallery/v/mike/20070707Gentian/ 2) Mt. MacFarlane Snippets from Vince's report: Dan, April and Vince headed up the Chilliwack River Valley on Sunday to hike up Mt. MacFarlane, about 1700m gain and 21km round trip. It is yet another classic day hike well documented in 103 Hikes that made its way into the Scrambles Book. It involved 3 hours of climbing up the valley in the trees, then you get to Pierce Lake, a nice size, with a little campground. Then through some nice meadows which were surprisingly in full bloom with several splashes of alpine flowers, then there is a headwall next to rushing waterfalls with handlines to gain another smaller lake above, still mostly under snow with just the edges melting. This would be an absolutely beautiful camping spot, as there are some fun scrambling peaks around the lake aside from MacFarlane which was a pleasant ridge climb up some snow patches to the top. 5.5 hours to the top. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=28838&t=28838 3) Punch Bowl, Manning Park Antje reports that the Punch Bowl area in Manning park is much less boring than the description in 103 Hikes would have you believe. Sounds like a neat nearby place to explore that gets little traffic. http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Punch_Bowl_Lake_and_Snass_Mountain 4) Pelion Scott N., Fred Touche and Robin McKillop successfully completed a 1 day death slog up Pelion Mountain. Snow starts after the last avalanche path, where the trail drops to the valley bottom. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=28780&t=28780 5) Widowmaker Arete Piotr and his friend Saar climbed the Widowmaker Arete on Crown Mountain. Nice alpine climbing close to the city, but sounds a little hard! They report that Grouse Mountain offers free food after hours. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=28755&t=28755 6) Darrington Seth posted a detailed report on his trip to Darrington, a climbing area in Washington State. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=28742&t=28742 http://picasaweb.google.com/seth.d.adams/RockClimbingDarringtonJuly4To7 II. Trip is almost fully organized, but maybe you can still squeeze in if you move quickly! http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=28404&t=28404 http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/14July2007_Price 2) Squamish Mountain Film Festival, July 13-21 The Squmish Mountain Film Festival starts tomorrow. Sounds like they might still need some volunteers. http://www.squamishmountainfestival.com/ 3) Phelix Trail Work, July 21-22 Christian is recruiting fearless bushwackers to help clear out the trail to the Phelix hut. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=28842&t=28842 4) Mamquam Lake, July 21-22 A trip to Mamquam Lake is being organized. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=28839&t=28839 5) Phelix Hut, July 27-29 An ex-voc-er is planning to go to the Phelix Hut (which he helped build).
