Upcoming Events and Trips 1) Lynn Park Hike, November 3 2) Intro to Climbing Courses at the Norm Wall, November 6th (and ongoing) 3) Smith Rock, November 9-12 4) Glacier Travel Review, November 10-12 III. Other 1) Cycle to Mexico next summer? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Trip Reports 1) Beginner Friendly Hike on Mount Seymour Roland led a group of people from UBC to Mount Seymour on Saturday. Roland reported: "There was no snow at the parking lot, and atop the first peak, about 6 inches of crusty snow hard enough to walk on. Scott left his skis at the car and only regretted this decision two or three times. It is not yet pleasant to ski up there. Everybody seemed pretty happy with the hike, and got to slide around on ther bottoms and other anatomies, on the crust. For those of you who indicated interest, but didn't come, we actually had three cars, so you could have gotten a ride. Keep in mind that people with cars usually committ at the last minute, but those without, need more time to try and organize rides for themselves." Scott Nelson added his own TR: "Everyone survived, and everyone hiked to at least one local maxima." II. Upcoming Events and Trips 1) Lynn Park Hike, November 3 Sophia is organizing a trip to Lynn Headwaters Regional Park this Saturday. Looks like some fairly mellow hiking that doesn't require too much equipment. See the message board: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=510&t=510 2) Intro to Climbing Courses at the Norm Wall, November 6th (and ongoing) The VOC is offering some introductory rock climbing courses at our indoor wall in the SUB in the upcoming weeks. The first two courses are next Tuesday from 11am-1pm and 3-5pm. The courses are intended for complete beginners and will cover the basics of tying knots, belaying and using climbing gear safely. The courses are limited to 4 people each, but if they fill up, don't worry, we'll offer more. He is organizing this trip to practice crevasse rescue techniques, glacier routefinding and possibly avalanche rescue. Sound like the tentative destination is the Wedgemount Glacier. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=498&t=498 http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Glacier_School_Review_and_Summit III.
