I. Trip Reports

1) Pebble Creek Hotsprings
Matthew Carroll posted an excellent trip report on his recent visit to
the Pebble Creek Hotsprings. In addition to the text he provides
waypoints, a topographical map of the area, and numerous photos.

2) Phelix
Various people went up Phelix Creek to the Brian Waddington Hut this
past weekend to search for some early season turns. Sounds like a few
of them hit the sauce a little too hard and missed out on the snow,
but others were able to find the "nar-nar."

II. Upcoming Events and Trips

1) Slide show -TONIGHT- Wednesday, Nov. 7
Gili Rosenberg will be giving a slideshow tonight in the clubroom at
7pm. Sorry for the late notice. The show is about Canyoneering in
Jordan.

2) Smith Rock, Nov. 9-12
The annual climbing trip to Smith Rock in Oregon is this weekend and
pretty much planned out. Last minute joiners should check out the
wiki and message board:

3) Glacier Travel Review, Nov. 10-12
If you aren't headed to Smith, you could consider brushing up on some
mountaineering skills with Ran. He is organizing this trip to
practice crevasse rescue techniques, glacier routefinding and possibly
avalanche rescue.

4) Beginner Friendly Hike, Nov. 11
Roland appears to be planning yet another beginner friendly hike, this
time perhaps to the Diamond Head area:

5) Brew Epic, Nov. 24-25
Christian Veenstra is organizing a ski trip to the Brew Hut later this
month. Sounds like the leading might get passed off to someone else,
and snow is not yet guaranteed, but if you need to plan in advance,
here is your notification. There is a wiki page in the works:
http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Brew_Hut_Nov_24_2007

6) Avalanche Course, Jan. 19-20
The VOC is organizing a Avalanche Skills Training (Level 1) course
through Canada West Mountain School in the new year. This is an
excellent course to take in order to learn about avalanches and how to
avoid them in the backcountry. More info:

III. VOCJ Call For Submissions

The 2007-2008 issue of the VOCJ will mark the fiftieth anniversary of
the journal. In celebration the journal will be bigger (higher page
count) and brighter (more colour pages) and will feature a
retrospective section including articles by alums, spotlights on some
gems from the archives, and profiles of key figures and events in VOC
history. We'll send free copies out to all contributing alums and
advertisers. This issue will take more resources (human and monetary)
to put together, so we'll need a lot of help

To help, you can:
-submit an article
-submit photos
-suggest advertisers
-suggest alumni we can profile or contact to write an article
-suggest current VOCers we should harass to write articles
-skim the archives for restrospective vignettes
-sign up to write one of a the suggested articles (on the wiki page)

This is the first call for submissions. The deadline is February 11,
2008, but the sooner the better!

All this info and more is on the wiki page:
