I. Upcoming Events and Trips

1) Wednesday Night Slide Shows

This weeks presentation will be by five UBC Engineering students who worked in Lesotho as part of the Go Global and Applied Science International Service Learning Program. The team worked with Mohoma Temeng, a community based organization, two students from the university of Lesotho, and local community members to implement a sanitation system in Qacha’s Neck, a rural area of Lesotho.

The presentation will start at 7PM in the VOC clubroom, and is about 45 minutes long.

2) Garibaldi Lake/Panorama Ridge - October 17-18

This trip is currently full, but there is a waiting list. It is a beginner friendly trip, overnight backpacking into Garibaldi Park. The hike into Garibaldi Lake from the trailhead is approximately 9 km with a fair bit of elevation gain, where we will set up camp. The hike from Garibaldi Lake to Panorama Ridge is another 7.5 km one way.

The pre-trip meeting is tomorrow, Wednesday October 14 at 6PM in the clubroom.

3) Intro to Backcountry Hotsprings 2009 - October 17-18

There is a common misconception within the outdoors community that there is a time, between summer climbing season and winter ski season, when the rain closes in, and there is nothing to do. This legend of "the off season" persists, but for centuries a (moderately) hardy band of "adventurers" have braved the elements to search out hidden pools of geothermal delight, and soak in the splendour of natural hot springs at a time when it's too wet to climb, too crap to ski, but just perfect for relaxation.

This trip is currently full. See the Wiki for details:

4) Wedgemount Lake Hiking Trip - October 24-25

Want to fit some more hiking in before winter arrives? Come on Janine's trip to Wedgemount Lake, a spectacular alpine lake at the toe of a glacier just north of Whistler.

5) Phelix Creek Trail Workhike - October 24-25

Once upon a time, access to the Brian Waddington hut was difficult. Then the club built a beautiful new trail.

The trail is in pretty good shape, but it won't stay that way without maintenance. This will be a great chance to get out and do some real, useful, but not too threatening work for the club. October is a great time for these sorts of things - you'll feel good, even though the climbing season is coming to an end and ski season is yet to begin.

6) Halloween Skaha Climbing Trip - October 30-November 1

It's that time of year again! If you're not quite ready for the Vancouver drizzle, then run away to Skaha for a weekend of (hopefully) sunny climbing. Skaha is a rock climbing area located near Penticton, BC, in the Okanagan Valley, where the VOC traditionally organises a trip around Halloween.

7) CAC Backcountry Avalanche Workshop - November 7

The Backcountry Avalanche Workshops run by the Canadian Avalanche Centre can help you get the most out of your winter backcountry experiences - whether you are a skier, snowmobiler, ice climber or snow shoer - new to the backcountry or experienced. Learn from local avalanche experts and visiting professionals. Catch up on new tools, the latest avalanche research and get the beta on local routes.

Tickets on sale at the door for $20. UBC Forest Science Centre, Room 1005. Workshop runs from 9:00 - 5:00.

Note that this is not a substitute for an avalanche skills training course. See the website for details:
