The Journal, published annually by the club since 1958, is a compilation of trip reports and club activities written by members (that means you!) and is a synopsis of the year that was. “MELTING MOUNTAINS” PRESENTATION AT VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL

Melting Mountains Awareness presentation in North Vancouver on February 23 to feature World-renowned alpinist Barry Blanchard

For immediate release
February 16, 2005 (Vancouver, BC) -- The 8th Annual Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival and the David Suzuki Foundation have teamed up to present the Melting Mountains Awareness Program at the VIMFF’s opening night celebrations, February 23, 7 pm, at the Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver.
Rising temperatures are altering the world's mountain environments in a number of ways: glaciers are melting, waters are drying up, and rising snowlines are taking a toll on low-elevation ski resorts. The Melting Mountains Awareness Program is the first educational project to examine the effects of climate change on Canada’s mountains.
World-renowned alpinist Barry Blanchard and Melting Mountains’ director Ian Bruce will show how to protect BC's mountains for the future. Blanchard is a passionate speaker who has been described by Explore magazine as "a mountaineer so revered that aspiring alpinists pin his photo in their high-school lockers".
Also included in the Festival Opening, (which is presented by Mountain Equipment Co-op) is the VIMFF Photo Contest awards and exhibition opening; the feature documentary Being Caribou; and the short films Solo un cargador (Peruvian mountain porter’s perspective of his life); Practical Norwegian; The Sportsman (a comedy about the Telemark ski invention); and Islet (an animated Inuit tale).
Being Caribou, written and directed by Leanne Allison and Diana Wilson, chronicles the five-month journey of Leanne Allison and Karsten Heuer as they follow the porcupine caribou herd of 120,000 animals, on foot, across 1,500 kilometres of rugged Arctic tundra from Old Crow, Yukon, to the caribou calving grounds in Alaska. At stake is the herd’s delicate habitat, which could be devastated if proposed oil and gas development goes ahead in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The film is produced by Tracey Friesen for the National Film Board of Canada.
Tickets for the festival opening are $15 in advance, $17 at door and are available at MEC, Centennial Theatre, or by calling (604) 984-4484.
