I. Upcoming Events and Trips
1) VOC Climbing Competition, Feb 22 (Tue, Today!)
The annual VOC climbing competition! This will be a fun evening of climbing, milk crate stacking and a prussiking competition. If you don't know what either of these are, please show up and you'll figure it out in no time. We've got some awesome door prizes and competition prizes to give out. This event is open to all skill levels, complete newbies as well!

2) Slideshow: Mexican Volcanoes, Feb 23 (Wed)
Adrien Thevenet will tell us how to climb Mexican volcanoes on the cheap and quick, with some awesome photos to boot (clubroom, 7pm).

3) Winter Ski Social, Feb 24 (Thu)
That's right, it's time to drag out that all-in-one down suit you saw in your parents ski photos of yesteryear. We are proud to bring you VOC 80's winter ski social! We'll be screening hilarious 80's ski movies in the background, which you can laugh to while dancing to some wicked tunes. We'll also be throwing out a raffle for the CAC, those great guys and gals that give us our daily avalanche bulletins. Also, there will be a potluck, so make sure to bring a delicious dish that you made (or bought), a container to eat in and a utensil.

4) Rainbow Mountain (Intermediate), Feb 26-27 (Sat-Sun)
Rainbow Mountain is a funny name for a mountain which is obviously almost completely white in winter. Nevertheless, Conrad and Katherine are running an intermediate friendly trip to explore its slopes.

5) Tele Lessons with Phil, Feb 28 (Mon)
After Tele School, you may want another lesson or two for more feedback and tips/cues/drills. Phil Hammer (EOS) is a CANSI Level 2 telemark instructor and is offering free tele lessons to help out the VOC (and to get more teaching experience).

6) Semi-Weekly Kayak Polo, March 1 (Tue)

7) Noriko's Monthly Knitting Adventure, March 3 (Thu)
You must be scratching your head at this stage, wondering why an outdoor club would have a knitting trip. Well, hard men and women need some off time too. This will be a beginner friendly trip, which doesn't necessarily mean it will be easy, but we'll wait for you if you are slow :)

8) Birkenhead Peak (Advanced)
Most VOC'ers who head to this area, beeline directly for the VOC Brian Waddington Hut. Here's an opportunity to check out a nearby mountain and a reportedly awesome 1000m run.

9) Wilderness First Aid Course (20h), March 19-20
Have you ever thought about what you would do if a trip mate of yours was injured? We don't like to think of these things, but being prepared could save a life. Sign up is on Tue and Wed this week, at the clubroom (bring cash) during gear hours or 12-1 on Wed.

II. This week in the VOC
1) Past trips and events
- Apparently Sphinx Ski Camp was awesome, with tonnes of powder, lots of great skiing, a summit or two and even some sun.

- A bunch of VOC'ers headed south for some rock climbing in the sun, in Red Rocks and Joshua Tree.

- Others went on a day trip skiing nearby, on Telemagique Ridge. It sounds like a great beginner friendly day trip destination.

2) From the exec's desk
- Our VP is finalizing the banquet as we speak, and the date and other details will be announced soon.
- The photo contest winners were chosen on Monday! If you're itching to find out who won, you'll have to wait for the banquet, coming up in mid March.
- The journal proofing and editing has been going smoothly, and we might even have a draft today or tomorrow.

3) VOC T-Shirts and Voile straps on sale
The colourful and inspiring VOC t-shirts have been a hit! We still have a few left, so why don't you come over to the clubroom to get one for yourself or as a gift? We also have lots of VOC Voile straps on sale, very useful in many situations (I own at least ten).

I spent the last week at Sphinx Camp wallowing in nipple deep powder. I was concerned that I might get buried by snow and suffocate. Should I bring a snorkel next time?

Snorkel in snow? Might work, perhaps a diving mask isn't such a bad idea too. Maybe even fins?
Seriously though, it's not too often that we get such a big dump, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. With all this new snow, hopefully the weak layers of yore will be buried and we'll have a nicer, more stable snowpack.
