I. Upcoming Events and Trips

 1) Slideshow: What does BC Parks have to offer you?, March 2 (Wed, Today!)

Join Jenn Plotnikoff, a ranger from Garibaldi Provincial Park for a presentation and discussion on: Winter travel basics, Avalanche basics and What BC Parks in SW BC has to offer you. Buchanan Building A, Room 202, 7:30pm.

 2) Noriko's monthly knitting adventure, March 3 (Thu)

You must be scratching your head at this stage, wondering why an outdoor club would have a knitting trip. Well, hard men and women need some off time too. This will be a beginner friendly trip, which doesn't necessarily mean it will be easy, but we'll wait for you if you are slow :)

 3) Veenstra's non-threatening day trip, March 5 (Sat)

Veenstra is leading an easy day trip this Sat. There will be no wiki for this trip, so just show up at the clubroom today (Wed) at 6pm to discuss the location and some planning for the trip.

 9) Birkenhead Peak (Advanced)

Most VOC'ers who head to this area, beeline directly for the VOC Brian Waddington Hut. Here's an opportunity to check out a nearby mountain and a reportedly awesome 1000m run. Postponed from March 5-6, this might take place the following weekend, or Richard might come up with an alternate location.

10) Wilderness First Aid Course (20h), March 19-20

Have you ever thought about what you would do if a trip mate of yours was injured? We don't like to think of these things, but being prepared could save a life. Sign up is apparently closed, but might be worth a try.

12) Annual Banquet, March 23 (Wed)

The year is starting to run out! Time for the end of year banquet! That's right, time to dress up, eat food, elect the new Exec and watch an epic slideshow and then dance and party until we're politely asked to leave! There will also be a slideshow by John Baldwin, the guy who wrote the backcountry ski guidebook, who happens to be a longtime VOC member!

II. This week in the VOC

 1) Past trips and events

Last week was a very social week with the VOC, with events on Tue, Wed and Thu!

- The climbing competition was a blast, as usual, with lots of prizes and towers of milk crates flying all over the place!
http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=17670&t=17670

- The 80's ski social rocked, with lots of colourful costumes and some cool 80's ski movies (like the ones where they "ski" using bicycles)
http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=52147&t=52147

- Two VOC'ers headed up to the Needles on Sun, dragging their bikes through all the new powder.
http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=18026&t=18026

- Another group of VOC'ers slayed the pow in Steep Creek, on the Duffy Lake road

 2) From the exec's desk

- The journal was submitted to the publisher last week, we should have a copy for proofreading today!

- There was a meeting with the planners of the new SUB. They keep on re-designing our space, now it seems to be triangular.

- There's a new trip organization and sign up tool coming up soon. It could make trip organization a breeze! Details coming soon.

III. Miscellaneous

1) Rewards and incentives for trip organizers

Woohoo, prodeals for VOC Trip organizers! In return for leading trips, you now get not only immense satisfaction, but cheap gear too.

2) Looking for slideshow presenters

We're still looking for a few more slideshow presenters for this year, only a few slots left! Have you had an amazing experience in the outdoors or while traveling? Have some impressive photos to show the club? Want to give an outdoor related workshop? Ignacio would love to hear from you at rozada@math.ubc.ca

3) VOC T-Shirts and Voile straps on sale

The colourful and inspiring VOC t-shirts have been a hit! We still have a few left, so why don't you come over to the clubroom to get one for yourself or as a gift? We also have lots of VOC Voile straps on sale, very useful in many situations (I own at least ten).

IV. Ms. Manners

Do you have a question for Ms. Manners? If so, email it to to your friendly neighbourhood VOCene editor and he'll forward it to Ms. Manners for review. Remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question, so ask away.

Dear Ms. Manners,

I like to do long, hard core, day trips. The other weekend I went up to Mt. Snuffles and left a small bag with keys, food and some clothes lying around by the Caboodle Hut. I noticed there were 20-30 people in a VOC group there, so I told one of them that I was leaving my shit there. When I got back it disappeared. I was not happy. What went wrong?

Thank you,
Hard Core Skier
===============

Dear HCS,

I'm not sure leaving your keys saved much weight, mate? I like to have all my stuff with me, in case I actually need it, but maybe that's just me. Leaving anything, anywhere in the backcountry is tricky - how do you know someone won't pick it up? They could assume, for example, that you dumped unwanted possessions (and make them their own) or that it is garbage (and carry it down to the dumpster). I wouldn't take my chances.

Yours,
Ms. Manners
