I. Special Announcement: Banquet and AGM coming up!

Once a year, we all meet up for a merry evening of eating, slideshowing, voting on the new executive members, laughing at VOC awards and dancing, and of course, marveling at the wonderful new VOC journal, which will be unveiled and given out that evening. Luckily that event has yet to happen this year! On the 23rd of March we meet at the ANZA club (near MEC) at 7pm. Comeon out!

II. Upcoming Events and Trips

 1) Slideshow: Trekking and volunteering in Nepal, March 16 (Wed, today!)

By Paul Lanfranchi:
"After graduating from UBC, I decided to pack up and travel around the world. The focus of this slide show will be my time spent trekking and volunteering in Nepal, with highlights from Europe and South Africa. Come out for countless stories of nearly dying on Nepali roads and Himalayan experiences." 7pm, clubroom

 2) Beginner friendly Mt. Rohr mission, March 19-20 (Sat-Sun)

We're planning a secret mission to Mt. Rohr on the Duffey Lake road for a two day backcountry skiing trip. This peak is just opposite Joffre and Matier and on a clear day the views are amazing, and the skiing can be excellent.

3) Skyler's Himalayan Experience (advanced) - Rainier, March 18-21

Attempt #3 on Rainier, last chance to do it in "winter".

 4) Wilderness First Aid Course (20h), March 19-20 (Sat-Sun)

Have you ever thought about what you would do if a trip mate of yours was injured? We don't like to think of these things, but being prepared could save a life. Sign up is apparently closed, but might be worth a try.

 9) End of Year Banquet and AGM, March 23 (Wed)

The year is starting to run out! Time for the end of year banquet! That's right, time to dress up, eat food, elect the new Exec and watch an epic slideshow and then dance and party until we're politely asked to leave! There will also be a slideshow by John Baldwin, the guy who wrote the backcountry ski guidebook, who happens to be a longtime VOC member!

 10) The Neve - For Real, March 25-27 (Fri-Sun)

Last year VOC'ers crossed the Garibaldi Neve twice during Sphinx camp and then at least once more by March. This year we've had three attempts so far get cancelled due to the slightly ridiculous amount of snow that's been falling. The weather may finally be starting to cooperate though, so we're going to take another stab at it. Only this time, we're going to make it.

A non-threatening beginner overnight snowshoe trip to Joffre/Duffey region. Trying to decide on Keith's Hut or tenting/snowcave at Upper Joffre Lake.

 13) Kayaking to Lighthouse Park, April 2 (Sat)

III. This week in the VOC

 1) Past trips and events

- A group of merry VOC'ers met with a group from VOCO, the Kelowna branch of the VOC, on a trip to the Needle Peak area.
http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=17655&t=17655

- A small group headed to the Brew Hut for a somewhat wet but fun weekend
http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=18241&t=18241

- Apparently three carloads of VOC'ers were somewhat surprised to all show up for a day of skiing on Zoa. Notably, one of the members' mothers came along on the trip. One carload stayed for another day and skied the nearby Nak.

 2) From the exec's desk

- We have been meeting with the planners of the new sub to negotiate the new VOC clubroom, scheduled to be finished in 2014.

- Our huts need some love. Brew has a piece of steel flashing that has fallen off due to the strong winds, and people have been ramming the door closed instead of clearing ice first, thereby bending the door. The wood around the windows at Phelix swells and makes them hard to close, and the Sphinx lantern needs fixing. Look out for some work hikes coming up this spring and summer to deal with these issues and others.

- Our treasurer has been working on the VOC budget for next year, which will be presented at the banquet (coming up).

VI. Miscellaneous

1) The exec needs YOU!

The VOC exec will be changing over at the banquet. If you think the club is doing a great job, join the exec to keep us moving in the right direction. If you think we're doing things terribly, join the exec to help guide us in a better direction. This is YOUR club, help keep it awesome.

3) Looking for slideshow presenters

We're still looking for a few more slideshow presenters for this year, only a few slots left! Have you had an amazing experience in the outdoors or while traveling? Have some impressive photos to show the club? Want to give an outdoor related workshop? Ignacio would love to hear from you at rozada@math.ubc.ca

4) VOC T-Shirts and Voile straps on sale

The colourful and inspiring VOC t-shirts have been a hit! We still have a few left, so why don't you come over to the clubroom to get one for yourself or as a gift? We also have lots of VOC Voile straps on sale, very useful in many situations (I own at least ten).

IV. Ms. Manners

Do you have a question for Ms. Manners? If so, email it to to your friendly neighbourhood VOCene editor and he'll forward it to Ms. Manners for review. Remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question, so ask away.

Dear Ms. Manners,

My parents would like to come on a VOC trip. Is this a good idea?

Thank you,
P

===============

Dear P,

There's no inherent problem in having your parents join a VOC trip. If they are not used to this type of thing, they might suffer more than usual or want to turn around. As long as they know what they are in for, it seems fair game to me. Just be prepared to take care of them, if necessary, they might expect it!

Yours,
Ms. Manners
