II. This week in the VOC

 1) Past trips and events

 - Many VOCer's were spotted at the MEC Gear Swap this past Sunday, and more than a handful managed to survive the night out in the unforgiving streets. Some VOCers cleaned up good, with skis, sleeping bags, and packs. Some even bought more skis than they had legs!

- Roland didn't let the gearswap ruin his weekend, and went up to Seymour on Saturday.

- Nine kayakers met up on the lower Seymour last Thursday, for a beginner friendly trip led by Caitlin S. Read about it here: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=19102&t=19102

 2) From the exec's desk

Just a reminder that you are now able to upload your emergency contact info to your profile on the VOC website, which will then be available to members only. Thanks to Veenstra for building this functionality! Read about it here: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=1&i=53732&t=53732

III. Miscellaneous

 1) 2010 journals available for pickup

If you haven't grabbed your VOC Journal yet, you are really missing out! This year's journal is packed with epicness, hilarity, and thought-provoking discussion about the outdoors, the VOC, and everything in between. The cost of the Journal is included in your membership fee, so you owe nothing for your first copy. If you'd like more than one, extra copies are available for $20.

 2) Rewards and incentives for trip organizers

Woohoo, prodeals for VOC Trip organizers! In return for leading trips, you now get not only immense satisfaction, but cheap gear too!!

IV. Ms. Manners

Do you have a question for Ms. Manners? If so, email it to to your friendly neighbourhood VOCene editor and he'll forward it to Ms. Manners for review. Remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question, so ask away.

Dear Ms. Manners,

I went to the MEC Gear Swap this past weekend, and now I have a lot more gear but no money. What should I do?

Sincerely,

Some Broke Bloke

===============

Dear Some Broke Bloke,

You have succumbed to a common affliction in the VOC, overzealousgearswapitis. Pervasive, and highly contagious. Twice a gear, many typically non-consumerist folks in the outdoor community wade a little over their head into the sea of easy purchases at the gear swap. Of course, if you realize that you bought something that you don't want or need, you could try to find it another good home. But quite likely, you bought a whole bunch of winter gear that will see good use in the next season: like skis/boots, snowshoes, or down. My advice is to use it for as long as you can (winter isn't over yet!), and then hide it somewhere safe. Then, in November invite your friends and out-of-town family to inaugurate a new personal gift-giving holiday: rememberwhatiboughtlastspring-ivus.

Or, if you can't make your rent now that you spent all your money, summer is the time to live out of that brand new tent!

Yours Truly,
Ms. Manners
