I. Upcoming Events and Trips

1) Beacon Search Practice Tuesday, October 25th

Avalanche beacons are an important part of safely enjoying the mountains in BC for much of the year. But they aren't very useful if no one knows how to use them. Before you head out into the snow with a beacon, make sure you know how to use it. This will be an opportunity to practice and get some tips from other club members, either with your own beacon or one from the club. This is happening as we speak, down at Wreck Beach.

2) Annual VOC Gearswap! Wednesday, October 26th

This will be our second annual VOC gearswap, where members can buy, sell, trade, or just give away outdoor gear. We've also invited the largest other local outdoor groups, so there should be plenty of gear floating around. If you've got some gear that never seems to make it out of the closet, dig it out!

3) Skaha Halloween Climbing 2011 Sat. Oct. 29th - Sun. Oct. 30th
Climbing over Halloween at Skaha - near Penticton BC - is a VOC tradition. It's typically drier there, and this tends to involve a big fire and party on Saturday night. So far over 60 people have signed up. The pretrip has passed - updates can be found on the message board.

4) 2nd Annual Spooky Scramble - Baby Munday Saturday, October 29th

Likely the most haunted scrambling trip of the year, this new annual tradition will involve scrambling Baby Munday in costume!

7) So, what's in your pack? What do you need for a Winter Hut Trip with the VOC? Tuesday, November 1st

Come get some tips on how to pack for a winter hut trip with the VOC. Some experienced club members, who claim to know what they are talking about, will bring their packed bags to show you what they'd take. Or bring yours and get some feedback on it from the veterans. Overpacking is easy to do, and can make a weekend significantly less fun!

8) Avalanche beacon training Wreck Beach Tentative - Wednesday, November 2nd
Avalanche beacons are an important part of safely enjoying the mountains in BC for much of the year. But they aren't very useful if no one knows how to use them. Before you head out into the snow with a beacon, make sure you know how to use it. This will be an opportunity to practice and get some tips from other club members, either with your own beacon or one from the club. This one's tentative, watch for updates!

11) Annual VOC Formal/Ugly Sweater Winter Social! Wednesday, November 23rd

The SIGN UP IS NOW UP for the annual VOC Winter Social at the Gallery (in the SUB, main level). The amazing DJ Oker will be spinning for us, and if it's anything like last year this will be a great party! This will be a potluck, and the dress code is formal, or an ugly sweater (note, "formal" here is to be interpreted in the generalized VOC sense, including ski boots, 90's ski onesie's, etc..).

II. Trip Ideas and Partners Sought

-Looks like there will be a group heading down to Smith Rocks in Oregon over Remembrance Day weekend. Check out the message board faff here! http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?3,76696
-It's never too early to start thinking about plans for New Years. Traditionally a bunch of VOCers spend as long as a week in a backcountry hut, with smaller groups coming and going as they please. It all of course culminates with a raucous party on NYE. Join the discussion here: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?3,77985

V. Ms. Manners

The results are in! The grand prize for Ms. Manners' Limerick-off 2011 goes to the sole submission, by the poetic genius of Sam Mason. Thanks Sam and get well soon Nick!

Nick M was leading and fell
Causing his ankle to swell
Now his foot's in a cast
Six weeks on his ass
Let's all hope he gets well!

by Sam Mason

No question this week, as Ms. Manner's has still got some research to do for the latest question.
