* 25toLife charity run

25toLife is a joint project between the SFU Beedie School of Business’ Project Management class and the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). This project and its committed team of students aim to raise $30,000 for cancer research and to support individuals who are affected by this disease. We host nine various events throughout the month of November.

On November 29 we have an event called Paired Against Wilderness which is a walking/running event you might be interested in. We are having a 10 km partner race around Burnaby Lake. The participants will pledge to compete and help raise money for cancer research. Once everyone makes it back to the finish area, we will have a closing ceremony with raffles and prizes.

We are always looking for more participants to raise awareness of cancer, and hoping that you and the club would be interested in the run. We would be delighted if you could help us with this great cause.
* High-def cameras for everyone!

The VOC has recently been offered an employee's discount on high-definition camera orders from Lens & Shutters. The more orders the better, we need at least 5-10. Talk to Carly Peterson about it if you're interested.
* Meru showing

The VOC is proud to present a showing of Meru, a climbing and mountaineering film which even non-climbing friends of mine seem in awe of. Get your tickets in advance before we run out!
* VIMFF!

Chances are this is already on your radar, but the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival is happening November 12-14. Highlights include local alpine skiers/authors Linda Bily and John Baldwin; climber Will Stanhope; film screening of Jumbo Wild; and a Nepal Fundraiser night.

** Upcoming Trips
------------------------------------------------------------
ONGOING

Red Rocks Remembrance Romp! · Sat. Nov. 7th - Sat. Nov. 14th (http://www.ubc-voc.com/tripagenda/details.php?tripid=1060)
Description:
Red Rocks! Typically the VOC tradition is to head down to Smith Rock over the Remembrance Day holiday to escape the rain and cold in Squamish. However, I have the whole week off so I am planning on climbing further afield in fabulous Las Vega... er I mean Red Rocks, Nevada!
This will be an entirely self-sufficient trip, meaning you must organize your own transportation, partner, gear etc. However, myself and a couple other VOCers will be down there so the more the merrier!
Climb sweet stuff like this: http://www.supertopo.com/rock-climbing/Red-Rocks-Black-Velvet-Canyon-Epinephrine

THIS WEEKEND

**Uber-Beginner-Friendly Intro to Hut Touring @ Elfin Lakes Hut** · Sat. Nov. 14th - Sun. Nov. 15th (http://www.ubc-voc.com/tripagenda/details.php?tripid=1087)
Description:
It's about that time of year where sunny days are getting shorter, and it's beginning to rain more in the city....but why care about the city; after all, we're a mountain club of course! And as some of you know already, the old addage "if it's raining in the city, it's snowing in the mountains" applies perfectly for our location in Vancouver, so might as well take advantage of it! Join me, as well as 2-3 other hand-picked experienced VOC members, to show you how to slay the POW (deep snow) that is found in Canada's Coast Mtns by journeying to Elfin Lakes hut for a weekend!

Explore Lizzie Creek Trail · Sat. Nov. 14th - Sun. Nov. 15th (http://www.ubc-voc.com/tripagenda/details.php?tripid=1076)
Description:
I am interested in going to explore the Lizzie Creek area (Stein Valley). There is a log cabin and trail in the Stein Valley that has been abandoned for a few years and needs some repairs. The purpose of this trip will be to see the area and possibly begin to fix up the road/trail to the cabin. It will probably be a bushwack and we likely won't even reach the cabin but ... you would be welcome to come along if you are interested in learning about trail work and bushwacking.

NEXT WEEK

11th Annual Jared Stanley Memorial Lecture · Wednesday, November 18th (http://www.ubc-voc.com/tripagenda/details.php?tripid=1070)
Description:
In January 2005, Jared Stanley, a UBC student, passed away while back country skiing on Mount Seymour. An annual memorial lecture was held for the first couple of years after Jared's death, but as many of Jareds friends and colleagues left UBC running the event became more difficult. One year the VOC decided to adopt the lecture series and every year since, the VOC has hosted the Jared Stanley Memorial Lecture: this year's will be the 10th installment. While Jared wasn't a VOCer, he's the sort of guy that probably would have ended up knocking on the VOC's door at some point, so we sort of adopted him and the lecture.

Jared's family, Anna and Bob Parton, fly out from Texas every year to attend the lecture and speak a little bit about Jared. The Partons are great speakers and great people. In previous years, after learning about SPOT devices from our guest speaker, a Search and Rescue team member, they promptly went out and bought the club a three pack of the devices because they felt that if such a device had existed back in 2005, then maybe Jared would still be with us. Much like the VOC sort of adopted Jared, the Partons sort of adopted the VOC.

The Partons memories of Jared will be followed by a talk given by Richard Riquelme, a tenured guide and AIARE avalanche instructor working for the American Alpine Institute in Bellingham, WA; often regarded as the #1 guide service in North America! For further background on the American Alpine Institute and Richard's bio, please follow these links: http://www.alpineinstitute.com/about-us/welcome-to-aai/ and http://www.alpineinstitute.com/about-us/meet-our-staff/.

This is an interesting, emotional, and insightful event for members of all experience levels we encourage everyone to come out and bring your friends! The more the merrier!
This is open to the public, not just club members.

Apparently Going Away Parties are a Cool Event Thing · Friday, November 20th (http://www.ubc-voc.com/tripagenda/details.php?tripid=1062)
Description:
THEME: 90's night
Wear your favourite 90's outfit, or what you acutally wore in the 90's, and have some of your favourite 90s songs to request!
Where: Liannes Place 2819 Semlin Drive
This is a Going Away Party / Celebration of Quiting my Job. I decided to make this an event, since pretty much all the cool people I know and all the people I would invite are from VOC.
Lianne will be leaving on November 23rd to hang out with some Kiwis for a month. I will be so sad to leave you all but not so sad to leave the wet Vancouver weather (especially since I work in Parks and will probably have had enough of the rain by late November). However, timed properly, I hope to be back briefly for Xmas and New Years to get some good backcountry skiing in before I'm off to Asia for 6-8 months.
This will either be a themed houseparty rager, or some other kind of pleasant night. This will be the perfect event for you to start of your weekend before a trip....
