Description:

Let's climb Garibaldi! Can you think of a better way to celebrate the end of exams and the school year? I sure can't!

The plan is to have everyone across the Lions Gate Bridge by 6am on Saturday, May 2nd. If we have two or more cars, we will rendevouz at a coffee shop in Squamish. We will hopefully reach the Elfin Lakes trail head by 8am, taking the winter route to the Elfin shelter. After a lunch break, we will push on, dropping down to the Diamond Glacier, traversing past the east face of Atwell to the toe of the Garibaldi Neve and the base of the Bishop Glacier. This is where we will set up camp for the night.

An extremely early start the next morning will see us up the headwall of the Bishop Glacier on to a plateau between Atwell, Dalton Dome, and Garibaldi. From here, if conditions allow, we will climb up a steep slope to attain the summit ridge.

We may also just do the northeast face.

DISCLAIMER: This trip is not meant to be beginner friendly! You must have glacier skills, experience crossing glaciers, crevasse rescue skills, and a confident self arrest. I am in no way a guide, just a mere mortal with a love for the mountains. I will be looking to discuss with helpful trip co-leaders topics such as route finding, avalanche risk, whether or not we should turn back, etc. There are areas where we will be climbing 40-45+ degree slopes where a slip or fall can result in serious injury.

This route plan can be found in the guidebook, Alpine Select. I also found a useful trip report of this route that can be found in the following link.

https://alavigne.net/Outdoors/ImageGallery/2006/07-17-19-Garibaldi/

Please note this trip report was from much later in the season, and hopefully the final slope to the summit ridge will be covered in stable snow.

If conditions do not allow for the trip to happen this weekend, I will postpone the trip to the weekend of May 30/31.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to shoot me an email.
