Description:

So, what is a Veenstra Traverse anyway? Probably many of you are too young to remember, but once upon I time Line and I would lead annual hiking-traverses around the coast mountains. The general idea was to introduce people to fast-and-light off-trail travel by pulling off somewhat-difficult traverses in a weekend. The concept was known as moderate-friendly (as opposed to "beginner-friendly")... which I think has now become a well used term. There has a been a bit of a hiatus - in 2013 the trip was cancelled after repeated re-schedulings due to poor weather. Last year we had a baby. We still have a baby (now toddler), but she will be in Denmark along with Line on this particular weekend.

The intent is that the trip should still be interesting enough that more than just beginners will want to come out. You’ll need to be in good shape, and some previous general-moutaineering experience is desirable, but not entirely necessary for everybody (I’m hoping there will be enough experienced people around that you can go on this trip to get some experience). This won’t be a “school”, although you may still learn something we’ll likely be too busy hauling ass in order to stop for practice.

Past trips of this nature have included, Price-via-BrohmCircumnavigate Garibaldi Lake, the Semi-Alcoholic Traverse, the Garibaldi Neve in Summer, the Powder Mountain Traverse, the Valentine Gates traverse, and The Last Drop traverse. If you don’t normally do stuff like this you’re still welcome to come, provided you are in good shape - in fact the whole point is to get you out somewhere you probably wouldn’t think to go on your own. Keep in mind, though, that you may find the trip “hard”. Probably you’ll enjoy it, if only in retrospect.

The Owl-Tenquille traverse is 2800 m of elevation gain, over 35 km. I did it earlier this spring, and it quite possibly had the most routefinding decisions per-kilometer of any trip I've done. The landscape is just beautiful with some very rugged terrain, many lakes, and (somehow!) no mandatory glacier travel. Don't let the fact that I did it in a day fool you into thinking it's easy; I can usually pull off something that would be considered a weekend trip in 5-6 hours and this took me basically double that time. Although the trip is non-technical (ie - no 5th class climbing or glacier travel) there will likely be steep snow and some general-mountaineering terrain.

To save weight we'll bring tarps instead of tents and the trip will only happen if the weather is good. Pre-trip will be at the VOC BBQ.
