Climbing-Specific Essentials No Matter What Rock Level

  • UIAA-approved climbing harness**
  • helmet (UIAA-approved climbing helmet preferred; next best is ski helmet, followed by bike helmet)**
  • tube style belay device (ex: Black Diamond ATC, ATC Guide, Petzl Verso, Petzl Reverso)
  • 1 locking carabiner for belaying (preferred style is pearbiner; ex: Petzl Williams Screwgate)

Non-Climbing Essentials No Matter What Rock Level

  • day pack (any backpack of approx.. 15-30 liters volume for storing essential equipment)
  • water (min. 1 L; though depends on typical daily intake)
  • snacks (trail mix, Cliff bars, chocolate, etc)
  • lunch
  • extra layers (e.g windbreaker, middle insulating layers, etc)
  • waterproof/water-resistant layers (if it’s planning on being rainy, avoid jeans and cotton t-shirts)
  • sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, and hat)

Overnight Camping Gear

Essentials:

  • sleeping bag
  • sleeping pad (ex: Thermarest)**
  • headlamp (ex: Black Diamond Revolt)
  • BYOB (bring your own brews)
  • tent (1 per tent group)

Optional:

  • stove
  • cooking materials
  • comfy footwear to wear around camp (ex: flip flops, hut booties, etc)
  • toothbrush
  • extra AAA batteries (for keeping your headlamp juiced)
  • marshmallows, smores fix-ins, and other stoke-raising materials

Rock 1 Student Gear

Essential:

  • All “Climbing-Specific Essentials No Matter What Rock Level” equipment
  • Non-Climbing Essentials No Matter What Rock Level

Optional:

  • rock climbing shoes (HIGHLY RECCOMENDED; ex: La Sportiva Nagos)**

Rock 2 Student Gear

Essential:

  • All “Climbing-Specific Essentials No Matter What Rock Level” equipment
  • prussik loop (for tying 3rd-hand friction hitches)**
  • Non-Climbing Essentials No Matter What Rock Level

Optional:

  • anchor-building material (slings, cord, carabiners, etc; recommended you wait until after Rock 2 to purchase so you know which anchor-building materials you’d like to use)
  • rock climbing shoes (HIGHLY RECCOMENDED; ex: La Sportiva Nagos)**
  • Personal Anchor System (PAS; ex: Metolius Personal Anchor System; 2 is recommended; *note: DO NOT use a standard daisy chain for PAS)

  • prussik loop (for tying 3rd-hand friction hitches)**

  • rock climbing shoes (ex: La Sportiva Nagos)**
  • Non-Climbing Essentials No Matter What Rock Level

  • Chalk
  • Quickdraws/extra slings/carabiners for ‘building’ quickdraws (ex: CAMP Mach Express Dyneema 60cm)
  • dynamic single climbing rope (suitable for lead climbing, ex: Sterling Velocity 9.8mm)

  • dynamic single climbing rope (suitable for lead climbing, ex: Sterling Velocity 9.8mm)
  • A rack (nuts, cams, tricams, etc; recommended to purchase AFTER Rock 4)

  • Non-Climbing Essentials No Matter What Rock Level

  • Additional rope/cord strands to practice knots (aim for one for each student)

Rock 2 Instructor Gear

  • additional anchor-building material (slings, cordellete, carabiners; whichever methods you decide to teach; extra slings/cord is useful for students to borrow
  • prussik loop (for tying 3rd-hand friction hitches)**
  • TR climbing rope(s) (depending on group size; may need 1-2)**
  • Non-Climbing Essentials No Matter What Rock Level

Optional:

  • Edge-approaching safety materials (fixed line near edge for instructor/students while teaching anchors, etc)

  • traditional climbing protection rack (assortment of cams, nuts, hexes, tricams, etc; focus on cams/nuts)
  • Quickdraws/extra slings/carabiners for ‘building’ quickdraws (ex: CAMP Mach Express Dyneema 60cm)
  • dynamic single climbing rope (suitable for lead climbing, ex: Sterling Velocity 9.8mm)
  • extra TR rope(s) (dependent on students’ ability to bring ropes; required for mock leads)

  • Gear sling (for holding all of the rack in one spot)
