Last year VOCers crossed the Garibaldi Neve twice during Sphinx camp and then at least once more by March. This year we've had three attempts so far get cancelled due to the slightly ridiculous amount of snow that's been falling. I think the weather may finally be starting to cooperate though, so we're going to take another stab at it. Only this time, we're going to make it.

The game plan is to head up to Elfin Lakes after school/work on Friday evening, cross to the Burton Hut on Saturday and then Come down the Barrier on Sunday. If we can possibly arrange it, we'll send a second, strong team, in the other direction and swap car keys in the middle.

This trip is what is known as a Traverse. You start at one end, and end up at the other. You can't say 'I'm tired, so I'll wait for you guys to get back here' like you can when you're bagging a peak or yoyo skiing somewhere. Once you're half way, you're committed. You have to make it. So, while this is a beginner friendly trip, in that you don't need any technical skills, you do have to be fit. We'll be doing 11km by headlamp on Friday, then 20km of rolling terrain on Saturday and then 15km of vaguely treacherous descent down the Barrier switchbacks on Sunday. It will be a long, tiring weekend.

The pretrip meeting is Tuesday March 22nd, 6:00pm, in the clubroom. It will start promptly, so don't be late!

The trip is March 25th - 26th, 2011

Equipment List

We'll be staying in huts so we don't need tents. Because of the distances involved, look at every item in your pack and ask yourself the question 'Do I need this to survive?'. If the answer is no, leave it at home. If you show up at the trail head with a ridiculous looking pack, I reserve the right to go through it looking for ridiculous things.

This page has a good list of what people bring on a standard ski tent trip (though it's for a two night trip, so adjust food accordingly): Gear Lists.

A basic list to start with is:

  • A set of non-cotton clothes
  • A wool sweater or fleece
  • Some sort of waterproof(ish) layer
  • Gloves or mitts
  • Toque
  • Headlamp - ESSENTIAL
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen. (We're hoping for good weather)
  • Shovel, Beacon, Probe
  • Food (Dinner, two lunches, and a breakfast.)
  • Snowshoes/Skis and Poles
  • Sleeping bag + mat
