ROCKCLIMBING
Hi,
I'm looking to expand my pool of climbing partners for the summer, and figured I'd post a quick note here. I haven't been around the VOC for a while (yup, I'm an old guy, although not as old as Roland), but I was quite active teaching rock school as recently as a few years ago. Anyhow, I figured there might be one or two keeners out there who want to exchange E-mail addresses. VOC JOURNALS
Great work on the journal, Steve! A limited number were distributed at the banquet. Apparently the publisher wants to be paid (or something like that) before we get any more copies. An announcement will be made once that happens.
GETTING CLUB GEAR OVER SUMMER BREAK
As the quartermasters will be leaving shortly after exams, gear rental times will be sporadic. We’ll try and keep gear room keys floating amongst the reliable and dependable VOC exec in town, which will probably end up just being Roland.
BREW HUT CONSTRUCTION
From Jean-Philippe Mercier:
It is time to set up thing about Brew Hut this summer. We actually have to schedule one week for the construction including the preceding and the following week end. I have several options to propose:
4th week of june
1st week of july
1st or 2nd week of August.
Please let me know if you are interested and when you are available.
We also have to scout the new site and set up the foundation before building the hut. Please let me know if you would like to get involve in the foundation effort.

TRIP REPORTS

TOFINO

Cape Scott wannabie ended up heading to Tofino with Doris, Stepan and 2 very exotic looking fruits. This was a last-minute (un)coordinated trip but a great one nevertheless.
Saturday lunch we arrived to Wickaninish beach (Pacific Rim NP) and walked along staring at mysterious jelly-like animals on the beach, eagles in the air, and sea gulls doing the "you can't catch me" dance in great numbers. The bush on the side of the beach (hard to get through) has beautiful dunes behind it with eagles flying overhead and no wind. Then we stared at tide-pools full of green "donuts" but very few starfish, saw smaller waterfowl (long-billed curlews i think with red beaks and funny legs), river otter running around the beach (>1m in length!), and seals, and wondered at the 5m waves on Florencia beach. The weather was characteristically unpredictable: sunshine-hail-downpour cycle lasting 30 minutes, and high winds. Good for beating out the city feeling from your fingertips. We then stormed Tofino's Sand Bar where Stepan established a name for Czech pool playing after winning 20-something consecutive games, beating every serious pool player in town. Two of us stared in awe.
After a late Sunday breakfast we split: Stepan went whale-watching (no luck) while Doris and I rented a double kayak and explored the area. We paddled to the native village of Opsiah across the water from Tofino, then to Mears island to check out the new trail that goes to a 2000 years old cedar. The tree looks pretty dead but also incredibly large (10 meters in diameter?), with things growing from the top sides, and bottom of it.... the old granddad of the forest is what it looked like. Then on to Grice bay but tide was very low and we stayed well away from the shore which made the paddling less interesting (besides getting stuck on a sandbank once). Saw lots of waterfowl, seals, eagles, starfish... and if you were in the back seat you could also see Doris' huge shoulders. The last hour heavens opened in a massive downpour. We returned, very wet but happy.
The spectacular-looking kiwano and fire-dragon fruit were slaughtered on the ferry to Horseshoe bay. After spending $15 it was sobering to discover that they taste a lot like a cucumber and horseradish, respectively.

Return2Sender that will be coming through Vancouver, BC later this
month. This is part of the Northwest tour which features an appearance
by Timmy O'Neill, that will be at the Macmillan Planetarium in
Vancouver on April 27. We'd love to fill the debut shows with climbing
enthusiasts and people within the industry.
And therefore we'd really appreciate your help in spreading the word to
the Vancouver climbing community and the UBC Varsity Outdoor Club.
