I. Letter From the Editor

The banquet is almost here, which means I am almost done being the VOCene editor and will have to find some other way to procrastinate my Wednesday afternoons away. In the mean time, I was told to pump up the banquet because we need quorum, which is some stupidly unobtainable number. Also, the bigger the party at the banquet, the more fun we will all have (I care mostly about the second point). The banquet has everything but the red carpet. We have awards, badly dressed nobody celebrities (your executive), a DJ and dance floor, dessert pot luck, dinner supplied by the executive, beer, wine and cider, a slide show about everest, an election, and a debate. I don't think you could cram much more into an evening. For those who come out to everything, I know you will be there. For those couch potato's in the VOC, the banquet will be like watching the Oscar's, news, much music, OLN, and the cooking channel all at the same time, but experiencing them all in real life. It is going to be a good time and a chance to pretend to laugh at inside jokes that less than 5% of the audience gets (hot energy!). If you are drunk enough, I'm sure the jokes will be funny.

II. Workhikes

1) Europa (formally known as Crap Crags)
When: Always
Where: The Chief

Jeff has decided that he is not going to lend gear to random teams anymore, but is looking for competent people to join him. Cleaning Europa is actually a very enjoyable experience if you believe that you do not have to be having fun to be having fun. If you are with Jeff, it becomes a pretty normal experience except when he doesn't teach you how to pass a knot if you don't already know how.

III. News

-Duncan's Mountaineering trip has fizzled due to weather and other commitments. The side of the package warns that even if the fuse has fizzled, it still may explode so don't think this trip is safely dead, it might still happen.

-Skaha is open! Parking and access at Braesyde at a cost of $10 car/day. This is temporary, but a permanent solution is in the works and involves raising 1 million dollars by April. Anyone have a spare million kicking around?

IV. Slide Shows
When: 7pm
Where: Clubroom
Wiki: http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Slide_shows

* March 21: SE Asia: traveling, climbing and deep water soloing. Combined presentation by Janet & Craig.
* March 28: Climbing and mountaineering in Oz and New Zealand, by Krystil

V. Upcoming Trips

1) Leavenworth/Vantage
When: April
Where: Somewhere that is dry and has climbable rock
Wiki: http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Leavenworth_and_Vantage_Climbing_Trip

This is going to be the first road trip of the season for most of us. Time to pull out your old gear and see if the moths have chewed core shots into your rope and find out if your cams have rusted into one immobile position. Go find your leading nuts (pun fully intended) in the closet and proudly display for everyone to see. Hang your rack from your chest. Try and picture how good it feels to grope your full rack when grovelling up a 5.8 that is kicking your @#$% because you are out of shape. Once again remember how solid it use to feel to stick your fingers and fists into cracks.

This trip offers no official instruction because the people going are all too busy trying to remember everything they forgot over the winter to safely teach.

Trip meeting today at 6:30pm in the clubroom, or just check the wiki if you can not make it.

2) Cliffhanger

Climbing at cliffhanger, Thursdays at 6pm are pretty regular, Monday's are not so well attended but are attended, just by fewer people. Usually food and other shenanigans available on Thursday evening.

3) Banquet
When: April 4
Where: ANZA Club, 3 West 8th Avenue Vancouver, BC
Wiki: http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Banquet

We have a DJ (Arlin), dance floor and beer, wine and cider. If you show up before 6pm, cover is $2, and $7 if you show up after 6pm. This is the annual general meeting and we have a few really important issues to discuss including electing next years executive, passing the budget and a few other items. The dinner is supplied, dessert is pot luck. There is going to be a slideshow by Robin Walshaw on his 2003 Everest Expedition. This event is formal, so if you own something nice, I'd wear it. If you don't own anything nice, go to value village and try and buy a suit for under $20, I bet no one can tell the difference.

VI. Trip Reports
1) St Paddies Day Celebrations

It was green! Would have been better without the Irish snow and the hangover, but was still pretty good.
