Trip Reports 1) McBride Scott N, Sandra N, Krystil K and I embarked on a 9 day ski traverse of the McBride range on April 28. We started at Blackcomb and skied down into the McBride. Then we got stuck in a whiteout for 3 nights before deciding to retreat back and finish the world's longest Spearhead traverse. A map of our route can be seen here: (campsites are black circles) http://www.phas.ubc.ca/~swebster/mcbrideroute.jpg 2) Gear Swap Many people went to the MEC gear swap and apparently got some good stuff... with some new skis etc. for the club. Thanks to everyone who helped get the club some new gear! 3) Other People have been doing other things outside. Afton and Vince went close to the Lions, Richard S tried tele skiing in mountaineering boots (2 sizes too small) etc. Lots of snow out there. Still pretty much too early to start hiking to high places. II. Upcoming Events and Trips 1) Red Heather When: May 12/13 Roland and others are probably making a "beginner friendly" trip to Red Heather this weekend. Check the message board for more details and rides. Quite possibly the only thing you need is some boots. 2) The Reel Paddling Film Festival Where: Pacific Cinematheque, 1131 Howe St, Vancouver, BC When: May 15, 7:00pm-10:00pm Join Mountain Equipment Co-op, for a night of the best international canoeing, whitewater and sea kayaking films of the year. The Reel Paddling Film Festival showcases a small selection of films from the World Tour, including the six festival category winners. Join passionate filmmakers as they explore rivers, lakes and oceans with paddlers pushing the limits of their sport. Ticket holders are entitled to a free subscription for RAPID Magazine and entry to win door prizes. Tickets $6.00 at Mec or $8.00 at the door 3) Beginner Rock When: May 26 Where: Squamish Web: http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Beginner_Rock A group of instructors will take a group of beginners for some introductory rock climbing. Ideally this is for people with no outdoor experience, and maybe even no indoor experience. Sign up on the wiki (either as an instructor or student) and check the message board for more details as the trip approaches. 4) Frisbee People seem to be playing frisbee on the beach on a regular basis. Next event is tonight (May 9). Watch the message board for details if you are interested! III. Other 1) Genetics/Risk Taking Study Are you an intermediate, advanced or expert skier or snowboarder? If so, we need volunteers for a study with UBC HKIN - looking at whether genetics play a role in certain risk taking/sensation seeking behaviours in sport. Who? Males and females, ages 19-40 years. Intermediate level (can ski/ride a blue run comfortably). The study will take 20 minutes and may be done at your convenienvce and remotely (at home). It's simply 2 questionnaires and a cheek swab. Sorry, no money to be handed out though. Please contact Cynthia Thomson at cynthiathomson@hotmail.com (a fellow VOCer). 2) Arctic Trip Where: Quttinirpaaq National Park, Ellesmere Island When: July 19-August 1 From July 19 to August 1, 2007, a group of British Columbia Mountaineering Club and Alpine Club members will be base-camping near Tanquary Fiord (82 degrees north), day hiking and backpacking. This will be a unique adventure to see polar ice-caps, musk oxen and maybe arctic wolves in a vast empy wilderness, especially in this International Polar Year. Backpacking experience important. Cost from Resolute on Cornwallis Island: $3,100 (A one-tenth share of a twin otter charter) To join, e-mail Kathy Nemis at kathynemis@yahoo.com or phone 604 254 1170 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTIONS to the VOCene are welcome.
