VOCene #5 - July 23, 2008 -------------------- About the Vocene ------------- This is the sometimes-weekly newsletter of the Varsity Outdoor Club. If you don't want to receive it any more, go to www.ubc-voc.com and edit your preferences. -------------- This Weekend ------------- Seems like nearly everybody is going to Pemberton to take in the Festival. The Club seems to have done a fine job getting around the scandalous entry fees, and arranging carpool rides and tent-sharing. But if you just heard of it, you're too late; all the free spots are taken. Just in case there are still a few people out there who are not drawn to crowds, high-power amplified music, and high entry fees, there will be other weekend options available, but they haven't been planned yet. Watch the notice board. Something up the valley towards Hope, probably Baby Munday area, Macdonald/Webb or Tomyhoi (across the border in the USA). ------ Things being planned (next weekend) ------ Long weekend coming up. Tantalus trip is going; talk to Maria for details. Some of this bigger stuff takes a little planning and messes with the spontaneity. Not wanting to compete with Tantalus et al on the long weekend, but we're thinking of doing a Neve Crossing. The usual time for this is spring, when you can cross the frozen lake, and you hardly see crevasses. Mid-summer you see more of the glacier, but it is still pretty mellow glacier for the most part. Non-technical but lots of walking is involved. Two nights in tents. Weather Permitting, of course. ----- Ask Ms. Manners ------------ As nobody knows what they're doing until the last minute, and I'm generally the last person to be told, I can't provide you with many trip options, so I thought a section on Club Etiquette might be a good way to fill the VOCENE. Today's Question comes from "Steady", who asks: "I've been dating this girl for six weeks now. Should I still be charging her for gas to ride in my car? If I don't, is it ok to charge the others in the car extra to make up the difference?" Official answer, next week. If you have any suggestions, send them in. -------- Clubroom and gear hours over the summer ------------------ If you want to take out or return gear, or hang out in the Clubroom, or join or renew your membership, do this on Monday, Thursday, or Friday at 12:40, when Piotr is there. Expect even more chaos after Aug 01 as probably both Piotr and Lee will be away. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTIONS to the VOCene are welcome.
