VOCene #7 - Aug 06, 2008 -------------------- About the Vocene ------------- This is the sometimes-weekly newsletter of the Varsity Outdoor Club. If you don't want to receive it any more, go to www.ubc-voc.com and edit your preferences. ----- This Wednesday ----- Being the first Wednesday of the month, somebody will bring the BBQ, (please) and we will all meet to tell outrageous stories, cook our tasty items, and chase around frizbees. When: August 6th @ 6:30 pm Where: End of Tolmie St, by the beach. -------------- This Weekend ------------- There are no reported blockages of the Sea-to-Sky, so far. But it's way too early in the week to plan anything. Wednesday night would be a good time to get your weekend plans together. ------ Things being planned ------ Veenstra's extravaganza, hiking totally around Garibaldi Lake, is the weekend of August 16-17. Get onto this pretty soon and give the organizers a little lead time. This is the beginner-friendly trip you're all waiting for. It would be good to embarrass Veenstra with a turnout of thirty people or so. Mountain Camp, next long weekend. Interesting area, to be announced. Glacier School is being planned. Get onto this pretty fast because it fills up. We run out of instructors, and glacier. ----- Ask Ms. Manners ------------ Ms Manners offers here sincerest condolences, both to the person who wrote in with the clingy friend, and the one who can't get into good personal relationships. She suggests that maybe if they traded partners, things would work out better. Another reply to this situation: "how I personally never get stuck in that situation is by liking people that run off into the mountains, water, sky on a regular basis...in places that are far from home,....like paragliders from utah, hanging out in Argentina,..or Canadians who are canoe guides half of the year and jazz musicians on a cruise ship the rest of the year..or German climbers that plan trips to the northwest territories without maps or kayaking experience( will we ever even talk again??)....or just travellers that run off into different parts of the world for various reasons that you envy and admire....under these guidelines, the problem of not missing your sweetheart because they're around too much never arises. Plus you get cool pictures and emails about adventures around the world..." Does that help? As to "Weekend Warrior", who had troubles getting organized for weekend trips, Ms Manners recommends avoiding trips entirely, and instead hanging out full-time in the climbing gym. All you need is your charge card, and maybe a piece of paper to write down the names of your new friends. Ms Manners may be back after her big trip to the Rockies, depending on what/who she can find out there, and depending on whether Conrad, our new Vocene Editor, wants to keep her on. ------------ Clubroom and gear hours over the summer ----------- If you want to take out or return gear, or hang out in the Clubroom, or join, or renew your membership, do this on this Thursday, or Friday at 12:40, when Piotr is there. Piotr will be off climbing somewhere from the 9th to the 24th of August and thus won't be around to do gear hours. And Lee is gone for all of August. Volunteers? ----- Finally ------- Ms Manners and I are taking off to the Rockies on Aug 8th, or maybe even sooner, so maybe no more VOCENE's for a while. Final question: Is it VOCENE or VOCene? Or Vocene? Why? All responses will probably be published. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTIONS to the VOCene are welcome.
