VOCene #10 - August 20th, 2009 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- In this VOCene: I. Upcoming Events and Trips 1) Mountaineering Camp 2009 - September 5th to 7th 2) Harrison Hut Midweek Ramble - August 24th 3) Hiking/Music Festival - September 5th - 9th 4) Gold Mine Trip - September 5th - 7th 5) Garibaldi Neve Crossing - August 29th-30th ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Upcoming Events and Trips 1) Mountaineering Camp 2009 Mountaineering camp is our pre-school year trip where VOC'ers of all abilities get together to bag some peaks, climb, hike, talk about all the skiing they want to do this year, or just ramble on. This is not an instructional trip but there will undoubtedly be experienced members willing to take inexperienced members with them and show them the ropes (or at least make them carry the ropes). Trip is Low Output and Beginner Friendly. The Harrison Hut is the least-often visited of our four Huts, and arguably in the most interesting location. We'll be passing Meager Hot Springs, but it might not be hot spring weather. If you have a few days off next week and you are looking for a cheap trip to somewhere interesting, this might be the trip for you. The plan is to hike Mt. Raineer or climb Vantage and then head to Seattle for the music festival. If you're interested, check the message board ASAP. This has the potential to turn into an epic, especially if the mine is actually found. Check the message board for details: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=9918&t=9918 5) Garibaldi Neve Crossing - August 29th-30th The Garibaldi Neve is the huge glaciated icefield behind the Garibaldi massif. Everyone knows the it as the classic ski traverse, when the crevasses are all filled in and buried under the huge snowfall the area receives. But is it possible in the summer, when the snow has melted and the crevasses open up? Of course - but is it possible by us? With this winter's record low snowfall it should be mostly bare ice - which means no dealing with ropes, just strap on the crampons and go!
