I. Upcoming Events and Trips

1) Wednesday Night Leave No Trace Seminar

This week, instead of a slide show the VOC is hosting the first in a series of monthly Leave No Trace seminars. Leave No Trace is a set of ethics and principles that are meant to be guidelines for low impact backcountry travel. In this session we will work through the principles and ethics to raise awareness, and gain/hone our LNT skills. There are many reasons why low impact backcountry travel is important ranging from the preservation of our wild places, to simply respecting fellow hikers. We will start with questions like "why should we do this?", and move into "how will we do this?". Whether you are a low impact buff, or you have no idea what this is about, there is something to gain from these sessions.

The seminar will start at 7PM in the VOC clubroom, Wednesday October 21st.

2) Kayaking Polo Session - October 21

Have your own boat, paddle and spray skirt? Want to get out kayaking mid-week? Come out to the UBC pool this Wednesday, October 21st, for a session of kayak polo!

3) Lynn Canyon - October 24

This is a day trip hike up Colliseum Mountain in Lynn Canyon Park, which is accessible by translink so it is a great trip if you don't have a car! Also great if you've got too many midterms and papers to justify spending an entire weekend outside. Most of the hike is through the forest, which is nice because if it rains (which it probably will) there will be lots of beautiful mist. Don't let the fact that the park is accessible by bus scare you off...the trail up Coliseum mountain is not frequented and is definitely far from a typical walking path. Round trip is about 22 km and 1200 m elevation gain there's lots of fun, squishy mud so wear good boots and gaiters!

4) Golden Ears Self Propelled - October 24-25

Wondering why there always seems to be more people signed up on trips than car spots to get them to the trailhead? Come on this trip, where all you'll need is a bike, lots of energy and some enthusiasm! The plan is to cycle to Golden Ears provincial park (about 60km), stash the bikes and do an overnight hike, tentatively up to Golden Ears (12km one way), camping along the trail.

5) Phelix Creek Trail Workhike - October 24-25

The pre-trip meeting for this workhike is this Wednesday, October 21st, at 6:00pm in the VOC clubroom.

Once upon a time, access to the Brian Waddington hut was difficult. Then the club built a beautiful new trail. The trail is in pretty good shape, but it won't stay that way without maintenance. This will be a great chance to get out and do some real, useful, but not too threatening work for the club. October is a great time for these sorts of things - you'll feel good, even though the climbing season is coming to an end and ski season is yet to begin.

6) Halloween Skaha Climbing Trip - October 30-November 1

It's that time of year again! If you're not quite ready for the Vancouver drizzle, then run away to Skaha for a weekend of (hopefully) sunny climbing. Skaha is a rock climbing area located near Penticton, BC, in the Okanagan Valley, where the VOC traditionally organises a trip around Halloween.

7) CAC Backcountry Avalanche Workshop - November 7

The Canadian Avalanche Centre will be hosting a Backcountry Avalanche Workshop at UBC on November 7th. It would be a great intro for people planning on heading out into the backcountry for the first time, or an ideal refresher for those more experienced with avalanche risks. Speakers with information on local routes, choosing terrain, recent research, and much more.

Tickets on sale at the door for $20. UBC Forest Science Centre, Room 1005. Workshop runs from 9:00 - 5:00.
