I.  Upcoming Events and Trips

1) Ultimate on the Beach (ongoing, Wed - Today!)

On every Wednesday when it is not pouring rain, you'll find VOC'ers down at the beach playing Ultimate Frisbee. Come out and enjoy some exercise with fellow VOC'ers, and maybe even some sunshine!

Where: Jericho beach, on the lawn by the parking lot at the foot of Tolmie st.
When: 6:30ish

2) Weekly Kayak Polo (ongoing, this week on Thu)

For a while now, VOCers have been holding weekly kayak-polo sessions at the UBC pool. Typically, half the time is spent practicing rolls, as there's always people that want to learn, and the rest of the time we play kayak-polo. The practices were recently moved to the beach, and are usually on Tuesdays 8:30-10:00pm (but this might change). Please check the message board thread for updated information (scroll down to the bottom - it's long).

3) Son of Rock, May 29-30 (Sat-Sun)

Son of Rock is the traditional spring/summer instructional climbing trip. The rock is finally dry, the snow sucks, and the days are long. The plan is to have several stations set up in the vicinity of the Smoke Bluffs in Squamish. There will be at least one instructor at each station. All ability levels are welcome and no climbing experience is necessary. Tentatively there will be 4 skill levels: absolute beginner, anchor placement, sport lead climbing, and trad climbing. Group size will be determined by instructor availability.

4) VOC Summer BBQ, June 2 (Wed)

The second VOC Summer BBQ for this summer is coming up! These are a great place to meet new friends, have trip meetings, or talk about ideas and plans for the upcoming month. Don't forget to bring your own hamburgers, weiners, roastable veggies or whatever along. Someone usually brings a barbecue. Frisbee, hacky sac, and slack lines are also encouraged.

Where: Jericho beach, on the lawn by the parking lot at the foot of Tolmie st.
When: First Wednesday of May, June, July, August and September, 6:30ish

II. Miscellaneous

1) Club Gear For Sale

The gear room is full, like bursting at the seams. In an effort to make room for all the new gear we are actually getting rid of some items that are still quality pieces of gear with lots of life left. We are selling these pieces because they are rarely used, not consistent with the majority of our inventory, or difficult to store. The prices are low by any standard, so come and get some excellent deals!

2) Ms. Manners

Do you have a question for Ms. Manners? If so, email it to to your friendly neighbourhood VOCene editor and he'll forward it to Ms. Manners for review. Remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question, so ask away.

Dear Ms. Manners,

I really like huts. Especially with the rainy weather we've been having. There's nothing like arriving to a solid, cozy hut when it's raining cats and dogs outside. Where can I find information about huts in the area, and how to get to them?

Thanks,
Hut Junkie

Dear HJ,

You're in luck! There are many huts in the area. Here's a quick overview of some of the more popular and useful huts.

1. VOC Huts
The VOC has four huts, and you can find more information on them on the wiki (http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Huts). The two most popular huts are Brew and Phelix (aka Brian Waddington). The VOC huts are free to VOC members, so go ahead and use them!

2. ACC Huts
The Alpine Club of Canada operates many huts all over Canada. The Wendy Thompson Hut is easy to access and is located on the Duffey Lake Road (http://accwhistler.ca/index.php/wthut). They also have two huts in the Tantalus range (http://www.accvancouver.ca/huts.htm), but access is a bit more involved.

3. BCMC Huts
The BCMC has three huts (http://bcmc.ca/equipment.asp) the most relevant of which is Mountain Lake Hut, near Squamish (access from Furry Creek).

4. BC Parks Huts
The first and foremost of these is the huge and sometimes crowded Elfin Lakes Hut (http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Elfin_Lakes_Shelter). Other parks huts are the small Himmelsbach Hut at Russet Lake and the hut at Wedgemount Lake, both great destinations for hiking and scrambling. There are also a few BC Parks huts on the sunshine coast, in Tetrahedron Park.

5. Other Huts
There are many other nice huts, such as Keith Hut on the Duffey Lake Road (popular year round) and many unofficial tiny huts, but I'll let you find those by yourself...

Yours,
Ms. Manners
