EASTER WEEKEND TRIP

Woohoo - 4 day weekend! A few trip ideas are being bandied about on the discussion board. Surfing at Tofino, climbing at Vantage, mountaineering at Baker… go check them out. You do have 4 days off.

JOINT ACC-VOC GARIBALDI NEVE TRAVERSE

There are plans in the works for a joint ACC-VOC spring trip at the end of April (after exam period). The trip would be 4-5 days traversing the Neve, with side trips to points of interest. Stay tuned.

POST-EXAM KAYAKING AROUND BROKEN ISLANDS GROUP

Eamon Mauer looks like the go-to man for this trip possibility. See his thread.

VOC CLIMBING WALL UPDATE
From Nick Waber:

Filmsoc, Gage Musical and some other organizations have made some pretty hefty bookings lately, so there won't be any more climbing nights for the rest of the semester. It's a bummer, but never fear, there will still be fun. Watch the forum for the big upcoming VOC climbing wall event.

END OF YEAR AWARDS

We need nominations for end of the year awards, to be presented at the
banquet!

Awards are:

The Broken Board - Originated in 1970 when a load of lumber destined for the Neve Hilton (a hut build on Mt Garibaldi, later demolished by snow creep) was destroyed after falling from a helicopter onto the only rock in a
snowfield for miles around. It is awarded to a member who has broken
something in an equally silly manner, or who has performed what is deemed to be the most spectacularly stupid act of the year.

The Loving Cup - An award cup designed to embarrass couples whose romance has blossomed during the past year OR to an individual who has tried repeatedly to engage other club members in relationships and failed.

Most Active New Member-male and female - Usually this is a book prize given to the new member who has developed their outdoor skills the most during the previous year (not necessarily given to novices).

Chorus Line - best backcountry entertainer.

And any other award that you can think of, let me know and maybe we can find a suitable prize.

Please send nominations to Jess D. at fiddle_gigi@hotmail.com

BREW HUT: THE SAGA CONTINUES

Have an excess of time on the weekend? Come out to help assemble Brew Hut III. Need more incentive? There is a rumour of beautifully toned ladies to keep moral up….

From Roland:

A new exercise craze suddenly started over the weekend. It's called "lumber hauling". All you need to participate is a back yard, about 8000 lbs of lumber, and some gloves. Already my Wife reports that my body is getting seriously buff and toned.

Saturday we drove out to Burnaby and ordered a huge pile of lumber, and around 2:30 a large truck with a fancy lifting machine on it, deposited the load gracefully near my back yard, accompanied by subdued cheering from my kids. The hauling crew arrived minutes later and we lifted and stacked lumber for about an hour to get it all ship-shape, before I called the construction off for the day because I was too sick to make intelligent decisions, or to work with power tools. (Flu? Pneumonia? Both?)

Sunday at 12:00 precisely, giving the neighbors time to get back from church, Scott Nelson and I started up the big saw and cut all the boards for the main platform, called "MP" in the drawings. Then Scott nailed them loosely, we tarped the lot, and went home around 3:30 pm.

This may be the plan for a while. We work for a few hours, say 6 on Saturday, and 4 on Sunday. Maybe next Saturday we build the upstairs platform, and Sunday, some side walls (1 or 2). If you would like to participate in this strange new exercise craze, we can accomodate a few people. We'll be on site Saturday morning at 10:00. If you phone ahead or otherwise make a "reservation" we'll know how many people we have. This has to be slightly low-key because we don't want to rile the Building Inspector, or my neighbors.

So far we seem to be on schedule, and within budget. The people changing the plans are frantically trying to keep up with the building. We've probably made a few mistakes, but keep in mind we're not real full time contractors, and if we accidentally make the Hut too strong, that's ok.

VOC JOURNAL SUBMISSIONS

Well, we got enough of them and they’re in the processing of being edited and compiled for the Journal. Thanks to everyone who submitted - copies of the Journal will be available closer to end of term.

END OF YEAR BANQUET

The annual VOC banquet will take place in the next few weeks. It’s a chance to see people you haven’t seen since September’s Longhike and also to celebrate the VOC year that was. Updates on the location and other specifics will be published in upcoming VOCenes.
