I. The past week in the VOC

 1) Past trips and events

- We have been blessed by some massive amount of snow. Two groups of VOC'ers skied some chest deep powder after surviving some tough trail breaking.

- Due to the massive amount of snow, the group heading to the Brian Waddington Hut (Phelix) never made it there. They still got to eat a delicious fondue. They might post a TR soon. The Brew group ended up joining them due to high avalanche danger combined with a lack of drivers and experienced members.

- A beacon practice session was held at Wreck Beach. It was determined that more practice needs to be had in the art of... digging! Maybe we should have an "Intro to Digging" trip.

 2) From the exec's desk

- The VOC received three SPOT devices, which allow one to call for help via satellite, some time ago via a generous donation. SPOT has agree to fund the subscription, including tracking for all three devices. We look forward to putting them into action soon.

- BC parks is celebrating their 100th anniversary and wants us to either have a big party in a park and/or install summit registers. We are contemplating taking them up on their offer of a sponsored party. We also wouldn't mind further excuse to climb mountains either.

II. Upcoming Events and Trips

 1) Sphinx Ski Camp, Feb 14-20

This trip is happening right now! Rumor has it that our friends are drowning in powder. You might still be able to join in on the fun if you act fast.

 2) VOC Climbing Competition, Feb 22 (Tue)

The annual VOC climbing competition! This will be a fun evening of climbing, milk crate stacking and a prussiking competition. If you don't know what either of these are, please show up and you'll figure it out in no time. We've got some awesome door prizes and competition prizes to give out.

 3) Slideshow: Mexican Volcanoes, Feb 23 (Wed)

Adrien Thevenet will tell us how to climb Mexican volcanoes on the cheap and quick, with some awesome photos to boot (clubroom, 7pm).

 4) Winter Ski Social, Feb 24 (Thu)

That's right, it's time to drag out that all-in-one down suit you saw in your parents ski photos of yesteryear. We are proud to bring you VOC 80's winter ski social! We'll be screening hilarious 80's ski movies in the background, which you can laugh to while dancing to some wicked tunes. We'll also be throwing out a raffle for the CAC, those great guys and gals that give us our daily avalanche bulletins.

 5) Rainbow Mountain (Intermediate), Feb 26-27 (Sat-Sun)

Rainbow Mountain is a funny name for a mountain which is obviously almost completely white in winter. Nevertheless, Conrad and Katherine are running an intermediate friendly trip to explore its slopes.

 6) Tele Lessons with Phil, Feb 28 (Mon)

After Tele School, you may want another lesson or two for more feedback and tips/cues/drills. Phil Hammer (EOS) is a CANSI Level 2 telemark instructor and is offering free tele lessons to help out the VOC (and to get more teaching experience).

 7) Semi-Weekly Kayak Polo, March 1 (Tue)

Come play with whitewater kayaks in the UBC pool. Fun (almost) guaranteed.

 8) Noriko's Monthly Knitting Adventure, March 3 (Thu)

You must be scratching your head at this stage, wondering why an outdoor club would have a knitting trip. Well, hard men and women need some off time too. This will be a beginner friendly trip, which doesn't necessarily mean it will be easy, but we'll wait for you if you are slow :)

 9) Birkenhead Peak (Advanced)

Most VOC'ers who head to this area, beeline directly for the VOC Brian Waddington Hut. Here's an opportunity to check out a nearby mountain with a reportedly awesome 1000m run.

 10) Wilderness First Aid Course (20h), March 19-20

Have you ever thought about what you would do if a trip mate of yours was injured? We don't like to think of these things, but being prepared could save a life.

Looking for a more in depth first aid course? We have a great deal this year, with flexible dates.

4) VOC T-Shirts and Voile straps on sale

The colourful and inspiring VOC t-shirts have been a hit! We still have a few left, so why don't you come over to the clubroom to get one for yourself or as a gift? We also have lots of VOC Voile straps on sale, very useful in many situations (I own at least ten).

IV. Ms. Manners

Ms. Manners did not show up for work this week (again!). We think she may be up at Sphinx enjoying the piles of powder. If you see her in any of the many photos which are likely to be uploaded soon, please let us know. We'd like to have a word with her about all these unannounced vacations she's been taking.
