I. Upcoming Events and Trips

With Easter around the corner and exam procrastination in full swing, there are tons of trips coming up!

1) Exam Period Special: Mt. Unnecessary, April 16 (Sat)

This trip is definately not unnecessary! Beginner friendly.

4) Easter Weekend Beginner-Friendly Trip to Brew Hut, April 23-25 (Easter)

An opportunity to go to the Brew hut giving enough time to actually ski something! Come celebrate Easter in the mountains, as it should be done. This trip could switch to Phelix, too.

5) Harrison Hut Mission, April 22-25 (Easter)

Our Harrison Hut has been cut off from the world since that mother of all landslides this summer. Or so you thought... This will be an exploratory trip - expect an adventure!

6) McBride Traverse (fast & light), April 22-25 (Easter)

The McBride Traverse - backbone of Garibaldi Park. So remote, and yet so close to home. Usually done in 6-8 days, we'll attempt a fast and light crossing...

7) Easter Plan B, Leavenworth Climbing

Skyler is aiming to establish a backup plan of climbing in Leavenworth, in case the weather on the coast is crap for skiing.

8) Jonathan's goodbye at Skaha, April 22-24 (Easter)

II. This week in the VOC

 1) Past trips and events

- A "croquet" competition theoretically occurred last Thursday. No word yet on who made it through those wickets fastest.

- There was a beginner friendly day trip to Zupjok Peak on the Coquihalla. High winds and a complete whiteout at the top made skiing the death crust um, entertaining. Trivia: A zupjok is a cross between a cow and a yak. Ew.
http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=18394&t=18394

- Another beginner friendly trip along the Coquihalla, this one was overnight and to Iago peak. Word has it they found some better snow than the Zupjok crowd.

- Climbing in Squamish: A few VOCers made it out to Squamish to celebrate the end of classes and start climbing. Then at least one of them went skiing the next day. Ah, spring.
http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=18719&t=18719

- Brad W. and Fabienne M. managed to get a bit disoriented along the Howe Sound Crest Trail, but found their way out and scored some free cake.
http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=18702&t=18702

-Merick M. and his buddy Dave hit the rapids on Gold creek in Golden Ears Provincial Park.
http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum2/read.php?f=3&i=18729&t=18729

- Another epic timelapse has been posted by Ryan Goldsbury, this one from the VOC Vantage climbing trip two weekends ago:

2) From the exec's desk

The New Exec-Old Exec potluck was held on Friday, April 8th. We discussed the coming year and exec members offered up their plans for leading/organizing trips over the summer. We managed to get plans rolling for tons of weekends this summer, but of course we'd like to have trips going out on every single one. The VOC is growing and we need you to step up and make trips happen, so don't be shy!

III. Miscellaneous

 1) Hello From Your New VOCene Editor

As you probably have noticed, this email is no longer coming at you from Gili Rosenberg. Gili has moved on to a post as the new VOC Archivist, after serving his club heroically as VOCene editor this past year. Big round of applause for Gili! Now you are all stuck with me: Len Goff. I'm excited for the year ahead, and looking forward to being a constant presence in your inbox.

 2) 2010 journals available for pickup

If you haven't grabbed your VOC Journal yet, you are really missing out! This year's journal is packed with epicness, hilarity, and thought-provoking discussion about the outdoors, the VOC, and everything in between. The cost of the Journal is included in your membership fee, so you owe nothing for your first copy. If you'd like more than one, extra copies are available for $20.

 3) A special Roland Burton supplement on summer in the VOC

You might be wondering what goes on around the VOC in the summer. In this special report, our club's very own Useful Person gives us the lowdown on the VOC's summer happenings. Thanks Roland!

****** Is VOC active during the summer? ******

Depends on who is going to be in town, but it seems that we have lots of trips planned, some hiking, a little climbing, some Hut work-hike trips, and Veenstra is planning to do at least one and possibly two of his famous "semi-beginner-friendly" traverses. Those who have been on his traverses in the past wouldn't want to miss them.

We will have the usual monthly beach barbecues, weekly Frizbee, ocean kayakking, and probably some other semi-social events that haven't even been invented yet.

To find out what's happening, check the usual VOC Web site, and particularly, the Trips Agenda.

****** Joining VOC during the summer ******

If you are already a Member, not to worry, because your Membership is good until September 2011. If you have a friend who's planning to join in the fall, tell him/her that we will start selling memberships for the 2011-2012 season starting May 1st. It's worth while to join earlier rather than later because you get to go on the Summer Adventures, and by the time Fall comes around and the mob arrives back at uni, you will already know who leads your kind of fun trips.

You will find somebody in the Clubroom some days at noon so you could join, or take out or return gear, or eat your lunch, or whatever. Summer hours haven't been posted yet but when we figure out who's doing gear for the summer this will be updated on our wiki.

****** Weekend Warriors ******

This describes most of us, but if you work weekends and get time off mid-week, or are under-employed, you might want to do things mid-week. If so, post on our web message board, and if there are enough of us, we will make it happen.

IV. Ms. Manners

Do you have a question for Ms. Manners? If so, email it to to your friendly neighbourhood VOCene editor and he'll forward it to Ms. Manners for review. Remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question, so ask away.

Dear Ms. Manners,

Have you been laid off by the new VOCene editor? Will you still be able to put food on the table? Can I have $20?

Love,

Your Children

===============

Dear Children,

Despite these continuing tough economic times, the new editor has agreed to extend my contract for another year. Dropped from my compensation package is access to the executive jet and lifetime supply of Voile straps. But I still have a job, so the Manners family will pull through. And no, you can't have $20...until MEC Clubs Night when I'll give you $18.

So VOC members, I am open for business: If you have any questions for me, direct them to vocene@ubc-voc.com and my secretary will send them my way!

Your Loving Mother,
Ms. Manners
