I. Upcoming Events and Trips

1) Slideshow: Fast and Light McBride Traverse - Wednesday, October 19th

Three crazy VOCer's did this classic ski traverse in a fraction of the normal time. Come hear all about it! 7:30 in the clubroom.

2) Beginner Friendly and Low Output day hike to Mt Seymour, Sunday 23 Oct

Roland is organizing a day-hike up to Mt. Seymour this coming Sunday. This is a great introduction to the North Shore mountains, and doesn't require any fancy skills or equipment.

3) Intro to Backcountry Hotsprings Oct 22-23

Come escape the city and soak in the Pebble Creak hotsprings with a crew of friendly folk. This trip will include fondue, a bonfire, and mulled wine. In other words, backcountry luxury. Pretrip tomorrow.

4) Beacon Search Practice · Tuesday, October 25th

Avalanche beacons are an important part of safely enjoying the mountains in BC for much of the year. But they aren't very useful if no one knows how to use them. Before you head out into the snow with a beacon, make sure you know how to use it. This will be an opportunity to practice and get some tips from other club members, either with your own beacon or one from the club. This will be around 7PM, location TBA.

5) Annual VOC Gearswap! · Wednesday, October 26th

This will be our second annual VOC gearswap, where members can buy, sell, trade, or just give away outdoor gear. We've also invited the largest other local outdoor groups, so there should be plenty of gear floating around. If you've got some gear that never seems to make it out of the closet, start digging it out!

6) Skaha Halloween Climbing 2011 · Sat. Oct. 29th - Sun. Oct. 30th
Climbing over Halloween at Skaha - near Penticton BC - is a VOC tradition. It's typically drier there, and this tends to involve a big fire and party on Saturday night. So far over 60 people have signed up. Longhike Part II?

7) 2nd Annual Spooky Scramble - Baby Munday · Saturday, October 29th

Likely the most haunted scrambling trip of the year, this new annual tradition will involve scrambling Baby Munday in costume!

8) Annual VOC Formal/Ugly Sweater Winter Social! · Wednesday, November 23rd

The SIGN UP IS NOW UP for the annual VOC Winter Social at the Gallery (in the SUB, main level). The amazing DJ Oker will be spinning for us, and if it's anything like last year this will be a great party! This will be a potluck, and the dress code is formal, or an ugly sweater (note, "formal" here is to be interpreted in the generalized VOC sense, including ski boots, 90's ski onesie's, etc..).

V. Ms. Manners

Dear Ms. Manners,

Last week you made a big deal about how the weather was going to suck forever. Now its beautiful every day. What gives?

Sincerly,
Dryspell

Dear Dryspell,

Indeed, in a seemingly divine reversal of weather we've gotten now nearly a week of gorgeous autumn days. Clearly, this had something to do with the limericks that I published last week on the subject (written with the aid of some other VOCers). My friends, I beleive that we have uncovered some sort of strange physical law here, previously unknown to humankind. The law states that if one complains about something publicly and via limerick, that thing ceases to be (at least temporarily). But we must perform more tests. It is with great pleasure, then, that I invite your contributions to Ms. Manners' Limmerick-off 2011. Send me a whiny limmerick, I'll publish it in the VOCene, and we will all watch as your life is then transformed for the better. Poems that appear to satisfy the rules defining a limerick, but actually don't, are encouraged as a control group.

If you want to read about how to write a limerick, check out the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limerick_%28poetry%29

Best regards,

Ms. Manners
