Ms. Manners -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Upcoming Events and Trips 1) New Years at Phelix Hut Mon. Dec. 26th - Mon. Jan. 2nd Many people are already up there, but check out the message board for an update on rides and discussion of avalanche conditions. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?3,77985 http://www.ubc-voc.com/tripagenda/details.php?tripid=179 2) 2nd Annual Canadian Avalanche Centre Fundraiser Monday, January 9th Last year we inaugurated a new tradition of spending a night raising money for the Canadian Avalanche Associated (the folks who put out the avalanche bulletins) while drinking beer and watching ski porn at the Gallery. It was so great that we're doing it again, this time with even more awesome raffle prizes (like a Westcomb jacket and an avalanche beacon). Tickets will be $5, or 5 for 20. http://www.ubc-voc.com/tripagenda/details.php?tripid=201 http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?1,80255 3) Winter Longhike 2012- Seymour Sat. Jan. 7th - Sun. Jan. 8th Well folks, here it is again. The most anticipated VOC trip of the winter. Drumroll.....Longhike!! This is the annual trip where we don't hike very long (or more likely, ski/snowshoe), but then have a great time building snowcaves and socializing in the snow. This year's trip will be in the Seymour back-country again. This is one of the rare trips where we have the privilege of taking a very large group, so it's always a blast. http://www.ubc-voc.com/tripagenda/details.php?tripid=197 http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?3,79997 4) Skiing trip to Elfin Lakes Shelter (beginner-friendly) Sat. Jan. 14th - Sun. Jan. 15th This will be an overnight trip to the Elfin Lakes shelter. A beginner friendly trip, but a few experienced folks would be much appreciated. http://www.ubc-voc.com/tripagenda/details.php?tripid=171 http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?3,80789 5) Tele School @ Seymour Resort Saturday, January 14th A VOC annual tradition, Telemark School is an opportunity for young, ernest, tele skiers to learn the ropes from old, grizzled, VOC telemark veterans. A ski resort, while lame, is a great place for learning telemark technique without the added difficulties of fatigue, a heavy backpack, route-finding, and buried hazards. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?3,80541 http://www.ubc-voc.com/tripagenda/details.php?tripid=194 6) Tentative - N Shore Ski Exploration, the Haynes loop Sunday, January 15th This tentative trip will be to ski a loop through the North Shore mountains from the Lynn valley to Grouse, or vice versa, or something else entirely! http://www.ubc-voc.com/tripagenda/functions.php?tripid=175 7) 20 hour Wilderness First Aid Sat. Mar. 17th - Sun. Mar. 18th The date has been set: March 17th-18th! This will be a chance to take a first-aid course from Slipstream with a deep VOC discount. Courses like this can me the difference between life and death for you and your friends. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?3,80161 http://www.ubc-voc.com/tripagenda/functions.php?tripid=195 II. Trip Ideas and Partners Sought III. This week in the VOC 1) Past trips and events -Pascale C. and Ignacio R. are heading up to Brew tomorrow for New Years. It may or may not be too late to join, but you can check out the posting here: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?3,80813 IV. Miscellaneous 0) 21 Mile Creek User Survey From Scott N: "The 21 Mile Creek drainage is a non-motorized zone and snowmobiling is prohibited. The Federation of Mountain Clubs of BC is conducting a user survey to measure the frequency of illegal snowmobile use in 21 Mile Creek. The results from the survey will guide compliance and enforcement actions by government conservation officers." Please take a brief moment to complete the survey, if you've been on a trip to 21 Mile Creek. http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?1,80729,80729#msg-80729 1) Rewards and incentives for trip organizers Woohoo, prodeals for VOC Trip organizers! Every year, the VOC immortalizes the wonderful fun we have in the outdoors in the VOC Journal. Receiving a journal is a priveledge of membership in the VOC, and it relies completely on submissions from people like you! Check out the message board for more information about the deadline and types of things you can contribute: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?1,79263 V. Ms. Manners ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Ms. Manners, I'm hoping to do a naked lap around the Phelix hut on New Year's Eve. What would you recommend for footwear? Thanks, Cold Toes Dear Cold Toes, Not having ever done this myself, I'd suggest your ski boots: shells and liners both. Or maybe the MEC expedition booties if you're feeling extra scandalous. Swimming flippers (and snorkel) would get bonus points, while snowshoes would probably be the most practical. Whatever you wear, don't trip! Sincerely, Ms. Manners ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTIONS to the VOCene are welcome.
