2) Annual Banquet · Wednesday, March 28th

The Annual Banquet is one of our most important yearly events. We'll elect our new exec, give out awards and laugh about the year, listen to a sweet slideshow by Skyler, and then dance the night away with our resident DJ Oker. This is also the first and best opportunity to grab your copy of the VOC Journal. The banquet is a no miss event!

II. Trip Ideas and Partners Sought

-Todd M. and Jacob C. are planning to do some climbing between April 26 and May 7, likely as a road trip down to Red Rocks. They are looking for an independent pair of climbers to join them, though they might be into swapping partners from time to time (saucy!): http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?3,84123

III. This week in the VOC

1) Past trips and events

-The annual Climbing Competition was last night. Based on preliminary intelligence gathered via facebook, it was awesome.
-Some folks headed up to Red Heather on Saturday, and skied the somewhat heavy bed feathers.
-Taking advantage of the stellar weather last weekend, a crew headed to climb Garibaldi(http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?3,84097) while others went up Atwell (http://runoutoffroute.wordpress.com/). A fine pair of trip reports, if I might say so. Oh, and this just in, another group climbed Atwell, Garibaldi, and Dalton Dome all in one weekend (see first link)!
-Some folks did the Spearhead Traverse this weekend as well! http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?3,83032

IV. Miscellaneous

1) Rewards and incentives for trip organizers

Woohoo, prodeals for VOC Trip organizers! In return for leading trips, you now get not only immense satisfaction, but cheap gear too!!
http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Discounts_for_VOC_Trip_Organizers

2) Call for Slideshow Presenters

Have you been on some crazy adventure lately, or do you have some advice to share? Consider attaining instant fame by giving a VOC slideshow this semester: http://www.ubc-voc.com/phorum5/read.php?1,80896

3) 21 Mile Creek User Survey

From Scott N: "The 21 Mile Creek drainage is a non-motorized zone and snowmobiling is prohibited. The Federation of Mountain Clubs of BC is conducting a user survey to measure the frequency of illegal snowmobile use in 21 Mile Creek. The results from the survey will guide compliance and enforcement actions by government conservation officers." Please take a brief moment to complete the survey, if you've been on a trip to 21 Mile Creek.

4) Mammut Pulse 3.2 Firmware Update - Available Now from the VOC

From the message board post: "The VOC can now offer firmware updates to Mammut Pulse beacons. This is handy because firmware version 3.2 was recently released. Why is the VOC offering this service? Because no one else in Vancouver does and because the same tool that lets us do this also lets us record the health of our new rental beacons. The cost for getting the upgrade through the club is $10 for members and $15 for non-members."

V. Ms. Manners
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Ms. Manners,

All year, I've been somewhat confused by our club president. She seems impossibly kind. Does she have some sort of hidden agenda?

Sincerely,
Skeptical VOCer

Dear Skeptical,

You raise a fair question. Our departing president, Ms. Katherine Valentine, is indeed an enigmatic individual. When you first met her, you may have been intimidated by the way her down jacket looks like it's been up every 8000m peak and survived, or the way that you can't really understand what she's saying so you assume that it's something hardcore. But you probably quickly realized that she is actually just about the kindest person around. If you epically suffered on a beginner friendly trip during her tenure, chances are she carried part or all of your backpack, despite having some serious back pain of her own. Or maybe last year, when your plans changed last minute on Friday and you needed a beacon, she cycled up the hill to organize emergency gear hours for you. Barring that, she has likely at least bought you a beer at the Gallery, whether you realized it or not.

If she has a hidden agenda, we may not know quite what it is for years to come. As an aspiring meteorologist, she is probably at UBC tinkering with atmospheric models to maximize favourable mountain forecasts (never, ever ask her what the weather is going to be like this weekend. She'll just scroll through the models until she finds one that says it'll be good). Or perhaps she was sent by Icebreaker as a secret agent to break the ice surrounding the Canadian wool garment market. But whatever her devious plan for global domination is (and I'm sure she has one), we all owe her a big thanks - and probably a beer tomorrow - for leading our club through another awesome year!

Signing Off,
Ms. Manners
