5. Recent Trip Reports

Garibaldi Neve Traverse with Summit of Mt. Garibaldi
We piled up into our vehicles and got on the road mid-afternoon. Most of the gang got dropped off at the trailhead around 17:30, while Noah and I shuttled a car to the Garibaldi Lake parking lot. After realizing we would be starting in the dark, we opted to swing by the BCL to get some extra motivational fuel (also to numb the pain of hiking our skis half way up to Elfin). Tastes like heaven, burns like he....

Spearhead Traverse: March 7th to 8th
As per usual for this year, this trip was conceived while crying about lack of snow and drowning our sorrows with plenty of beer. The thought was that instead of bushwhacking for hours on end (which some of us have done too much of this season), we could simply take the Whistler lifts into the alpine. Email faff started. It grew. The trip was publicly posted. It grew even more. At the pre-trip on Wednesday evening, many people found themselves in the club room. Plans were made: three independent groups and plans to camp on the Naden glacier, a spot recommended by John Baldwin due to morning and evening sun, as well as great views...

2014 - 04 - Queen Bess to Pemberton: Photo Album Trip Report
Check out this beautiful collection of photos from a ski traverse!

Point Roberts Loop: Cycling a Forgotten Piece of the USA
Point Roberts is a weird forgotten piece of the USA. It is landlocked by Canada, but lies south of the 49th parallel, the arbitrary border line. By any reasonable account it should have been part of British Columbia, and not Washington State. As ridiculous as it sounds, the school buses, garbage trucks and US postal service vehicles all travel from the rest of Washington State, cross the border into Canada, and then cross the border again into Point Roberts...

THIS WEEKEND

Brew Hut Trip, lights · Sat. Mar. 28th - Sun. Mar. 29th
This is the trip you have all been waiting for. We will go up to the Brew Hut and use our diverse skills to install the solar lighting kit. Actually we don't have any diverse skills but that's totally OK because we will develop skills. We have a moderate amount of stuff to carry, like the biggest piece is 1.5 kg, so that should not be a problem. We should bring snowshoes because the last time I was up there I punched holes for a long way and that was tiring. As usual, rides will be scarce, but we can probably get two cars up there, or 1 x 4wd + 1 with the passengers being ferried. If you are pretty sure you can come and you want to come, sign up as committed asap. This trip should be HOT! Pre-trip meeting will be Wednesday, March 25th at 6 PM in the clubroom.

NEXT WEEKEND

Rock Resurrection - Easter Long Weekend Climbing (Beginner Friendly) · Fri. Apr. 3rd - Sun. Apr. 5th
Climbing it is! Climbing, simply put, is awesome. Let's go find some rock over Easter long weekend. The location will be finalized based on weather and interest at the pre-trip meeting. Locally we can go to Squamish, Vantage, Skaha, or Leavenworth. This won't be an instructional trip, but if you don't know how to set up top ropes, there will likely be enough experienced climbers around to help with that. Pre-trip meeting will be on Wednesday, April 1st at 7:00 PM, location TBD.

Dear Ms. Manners,

Is it already spring? I thought winter was suppose to come before spring... where did winter go? Did we skip it?

Sincerely,
Confused Snow Lover

===

Dear Confused Snow Lover,

It is true that the concept of winter was vague this year, with a few weeks of snow here or there bordered by weeks of high freezing elevations and ice. The local mountains were scarcely open for skiing, and more people were able to hike and climb rock more frequently over the last few months without worries of snow, rain or cold than the average year. To find ice for ice climbing, there were few nearby locations and a long drive was required most weekends.

However, if you were determined enough, there certainly was snow at higher elevations, although some weekends it was mostly crusty and/or icy in some areas. I have seen photo evidence and have some first hand experience to support this claim! The good news: Whistler makes snow for you! If resort skiing is your style, it is not all over yet! The bad news: if you want to find back country snow, you may need to carry your skis for a long time and the quality of snow may not be ideal, depending on the weekend.

The bright side: spring has arrived early, and it is now in fact also officially spring! This means that it may be time to break out your summer gear and expect sun, warmth and joy! Although we have had two winters in a row with minimal snow, perhaps next year will be the year for good snow conditions. Experts can continue enjoying snow with little need to carry skis so long, and beginner to intermediate skiers may be able to learn to love snow and skiing all over again.

Best of luck! See you at the banquet tomorrow night!

Sincerely,
Ms. Manners
