VOCene #1, May 3 2016
Special thank you to Andrew Cavers for writing the VOCene this past year!

* Easter at Smith Rock (

** Upcoming Trips

VOC Barbeque ( - May 4 @ 6 pm --- Locarno Beach
Come on out for a social gathering and recount adventures! Look for the VOC flag.

Son of Rock ( - May 7 - 8 --- Squamish
Learn how to climb outdoors - the trip registration is currently full. A reminder that the pre-trip meeting is tonight (May 3rd) at 6pm in ESB2012.

Climbing Trip ( - May 13 - 15 --- Vantage, WA
Use those skills you learned at Son of Rock. Vantage has some easier climbs (5.6, 5.7), but you need to be able to lead to set up top ropes. This is not an instructional trip, you should have some climbing experience and be familiar with top rope belaying.

Explore Galiano Island by bike! The trip size is limited.

Summer Stokefest 1 ( - May 14 - 15 --- Murrin Park, Squamish

** Meet the new exec!
Cora - president - my passions lie in learning how the natural world works, experiencing the beauty of the world first hand, and sharing knowledge and skills with people around me, which I achieve through studying ecology-evolution dynamics and being actively involved in the VOC exploring the great outdoors, and I am honoured to serve as your president for this coming year!
Byron - VP - you will most often see him running around organizing one of the many large VOC events such as Son of Rock.
Else - Treasurer - I'm most happy scrambling up some rocks, biking around islands and sleeping on beaches: let the summer begin!
Katie - Secretary - an ex-engineer, current geneticist who likes climbing pointy things be it in snow or on classic granite!
Liz - Membership Chair
Birgit - VOCene editor - always keen for learning, hiking, running etc.; anything that gets me outside.
Zack - Trips coordinator - stoked on climbing and life!
Anna - Quartermaster
Bryan - Quartermaster
Carly - Quartermaster - if you ever want to know more about running, Carly's a good person to talk to!
Kelsey - Quartermaster - always energetic and keen to adventure, learn, and teach, and learn some more… to adventure more.
Nicholas - Quartermaster - I’m a third year undergrad serving as quartermaster who loves all things climbing.
Caitlin - Journal editor - enjoys whitewater kayaking, using sarcasm and dance parties involving orange fleece.
Artem - Archivist - as archivist I'd like to build upon our resources for planning/executing outdoor adventures, if you have something which you think will help with trip planning let me know and we can do it.
Jess - Public relations - here to spread the VOC loveeee
Devon - FMCBC/ACC rep - talk to him if you want to hear more about the VOC environmental committee!
George - Huts Coordinator - I'm a fourth year Civil Engineering student from North Vancouver who loves to design and build outdoorsy things!
Lea - Trail coordinator - does most things related to snow, dirt, and rock, and has managed to make her entire undergrad and suite of seasonal jobs be about being outside.
Corey - Climbing Wall - I like climbing
Roland - Useful person - I enjoy giving others a chance to go places and do things that they wouldn't have been able to do if they hadn't joined VOC. I think this is a good idea. I am not very new, though.
Nick - Swag Master - I’m the new Master of Swag and Quarters; just because I can’t get enough of that fresh gear smell. In climbing season I like to climb and in ski season I like to ski, and I try to squeeze in any other new outdoor pursuits where possible.
Kevin - Centennial Tzar - Whitewater kayakin' makes my heart buzz.
