Avalanche beacon training
Well folks it is that time of year again. That’s right SNOW time. This means great skiing and also the risk of avalanches in the back country. In line with getting ready for winter we all need to practice everyone’s favorite winter backcountry skill. NO not spooning… Avalanche beacon search and recovery.
If you are new to the VOC and are planning to play in the snow this winter this skill is a must. We will be meeting at the top of the stairs which lead down to Wreck Beach. (Trail 6) Come along on Monday evening the 7th of November at 19:00 to practice for a couple of hours. In proper VOC trip style we will head to Kerners for a pint afterwards. Bring your beacon, warm clothes, a head lamp and a friendly disposition. Beacons can be signed out from the club during gear hours. A plastic container is recommended to protect your beacon during a burial practice. Please note there is a deposit required for beacons. See the wiki for further details. NO previous experience is necessary. If you have prior beacon experience please consider signing up as a “helper” to show a small group of new kids (3or4) a few tricks of the trade. :-)
