Description:

Hey all stoked VOC gym climbers! Have you been climbing on plastic all season long and been hoping to get outdoors, especially as the weather gets sunny and gorgeous? And are you stoked to go to Son of Rock, but aren't available to do so because of scheduling or that you leave for the summer before that day? Well no worries; we've got your back! Join me for a day of learning the skills of Rock 2 (anchor-building) and Rock 4 (traditional gear placement and anchors) in an outdoor rock intensive.

This course is built for those who seek to either: -be competent at building top-rope systems for outdoor climbing and/or -people who wish to have the pre-requisite skills to follow a more experienced person in a group on a longer climb. We will focus primarily on the skills that relate to outdoor rock climbing specifically (and how it's different than the gym), with particular emphasis on the cirriculum for Rock 2 and 4 (anchor-building skills using both fixed anchors and traditional gear as well as rappelling), such that you can go into your summer educated and stoked on outdoor rock!

Why am I running this course you may ask so close to Son of Rock? A few reasons: 1) I hope to provide those who can't attend Son of Rock the opportunity to learn skills to use over the course of the summer and 2) I can't attend Son of Rock due to my guide training beginning that weekend, but I would like to still have an opportunity to teach you all my skills.

If you're not familiar with who I am in the VOC, I've been around for awhile, and I'm an AMGA Apprentice Rock Guide and certified Single Pitch Instructor. As I've seen myself doing more big objectives this spring, I've noticed I haven't been doing much instruction, and hence to prep for my guide training this May, I hope to provide you all with this course.

More details will be posted later in the week after I finish my final exam of my degree. Get stoked to get out on real rock!

Pre-Reqs:

  • At least 6 months of gym climbing
  • Competence climbing a gym-grade 5.9 route on top-rope
  • Have taken the Aviary belay test and/or VOC Rock 1

And if you haven't been up to Squamish before or aren't yet convinced, take a look at this picture from the top of one of the climbs:
