Description:

Paddle Canada Sea Kayak Level 1

Have you ever wanted to learn the basics of sea kayaking, and be able to take friends safely on the water? Are you looking to develop your own kayaking skills, or learn the details of how to navigate and understand marine weather? Then this may be the course for you!

This is a two-day introductory course that will teach you how to lead day trips in sheltered waters with friends. Upon successful completion, you will receive a nationally recognized Paddle Canada Level 1 Sea Kayak certificate. More details about this certification course can be found here: https://www.paddlecanada.com/national-sea-kayak-program-skills-stream/.

In partnership with the UBC Sailing Club, we are running a course designed to teach some folks the basics of kayaking! Due to the relatively low cost of this course, I am asking that those who take part also commit to helping lead the Indian Arm Kayak Trip in September, as a way to give back and teach others. Please make sure you can commit to this before signing up!

Schedule:

Wednesday, July 11th: pre-trip meeting and theory (be prepared to leave with some homework!)

Saturday and Sunday, July 14th-15th: on-water sessions at Jericho Beach

Some important details:

You will need to sign a Paddle Canada waiver before participating in this trip.

All on-water participants must have a wetsuit or other immersion protection – we will spend lots of time in the water!

The cost of the course will be $75.

Due to the nature of this trip, I can only accept 5 VOC participants on the water participating in the full course. The decision on these participants will be the first 5 people signed up as committed who have all of the necessary gear and forms completed. This will be decided prior to the pre-trip meeting.

However, all are invited to take part in the theory portion on July 11th! If you are interested in learning a little more about safety, navigation, sea state, and weather, we welcome your attendance to the on-land orientation and theory.
