UPDATE:

We are still looking for at least one more person to commit to the loop trip. Please sign up if you are potentially intersted in the loop trip. Please only sign up if you are a strong kayaker and understand that we may not make it all the way.

Also, given how far we have to kayak on the last day, there is a possibility that we may need to camp on Monday night too. We can pay the kayak rental place $150 to pick some of us up in Egmont on Monday morning if you for sure can't come if there is the possibility that we may need to camp on Monday night.

Here are our contingency plans in case we can't make it all the way:

  • If within the first few minutes (or hour or two hours or so) of us beginning our paddle to Beaver Island it turns out that the water is too rough to make it all the way to Beaver Island by the evening, we will return to Sechelt and spend either two or three days kayaking in Sechelt Inlet and Salmon Inlet.
  • If we get a significant way to Beaver Island and realise that we are not going to make it to Beaver Island before dark, we will camp either on Thormanby Island or in Smugglers' Cove on Saturday night. Then, on Sunday we will either request a shuttle ride from Alex's parents back to Sechelt or, if we think we'll be able to kayak back to Sechelt, we will kayak back to Sechelt ourselves. Then, if we feel like it, we will spend Monday kayaking around Sechelt Inlet.
  • If we start kayaking in Agamemnon Channel and Agamemnon Channel turns out to be too rough to kayak in, we will return to Irvine's Landing and request a shuttle pick up from Alex's parents
  • If after we pass Skookumchuck Narrows (at 1 pm on Monday) we realise that we're not going to make it to Sechelt before or close to sunset at 6:36 pm, we will either:
  •               If we can make it to Tuwanek before sunset, we will request a shuttle pick up  from the kayak rental place at Tuwanek
  •               If we can't make it to Twuanek before sunset, we will camp in Sechelt Inlet on Monday night and complete the paddle to Sechelt on the Tuesday morning

Hi everyone,

I want to organise a kayaking trip on the Sunshine Coast. I am planning on leaving from Sechelt and kayaking towards Halfmoon Bay, Madeira Park and Nelson Island. Then, I am planning on kayaking through Agamemnon Channel towards Captain Island. Finally, I am planning on kayaking through Sechelt Inlet back to Sechelt.

Here is my proposed itinerary:

Saturday, October 6 - kayak from Sechelt to somewhere around Beaver Island or Nelson Island (I don't know exactly where yet or where we will camp - but we'll figure something out) (approximately 30 km)

Sunday, October 7 - kayak through Agamemnon Channel past Captain Island and camp at Little Killam Bay (https://www.bcmarinetrails.org/bc-map?mapitem=7749) (approximately 25 km)

Monday, October 8 - kayak from Little Killam Bay to Sechelt (approximately 40 km with 30 km after passing Skookumchuck Narrows at about 1 pm)

A big obstacle on the last day will be getting past Skookumchuck Narrows. I've looked at the tide and current tables (http://www.tides.gc.ca/eng/station?type=0&date=2018%2F10%2F05&sid=7843&tz=PDT&pres=1 and http://www.tides.gc.ca/eng/data/table/2018/curr_ref/4200#s8), and it seems that slack tide will occur at about 1 pm; this is when we will be able to cross the rapids. After that we will have quite a long push to paddle the final thirty kilometers before sunset at 6:36 pm, but the current will be in our favour!

This is a very ambitous trip to do over three days, so if you sign up for this trip, you should definitely be a reasonably experienced kayaker. You should also definitely know how to self rescue in a kayak. You should also know that if the wind turns out to be too strong (or something else like that), it is very possible that we won't be able to complete the entire loop, and we'll have to figure out some other way to get back to Sechelt (I know some people in Sechelt, so maybe we could convince them to drive us and our kayaks back?). Hopefully this won't happen though.

I am planning on renting kayaks in Sechelt for the weekend, and I can drive people to Sechelt from Vancouver.

Also, if no-one has signed up for this trip within a week or two, I will change this trip to a two or three day trip in Sechelt Inlet and Salmon Inlet. So, if you are interested in kayaking in Sechelt Inlet and Salmon Inlet, please sign up as intersted to the trip that I've posted here and say that you're interested in kayaking in Sechelt Inlet and Salmon Inlet. Although a kayak trip in Sechelt Inlet and Salmon Inlet would be a little more laid-back, you should still know how to self rescue if you want to do that trip instead.

Thanks,

Alex
