Pre-trip meeting location: clubroom

Description:

The pre-trip meeting is mandatory!

Early season skiing is where it's at, so the plan is to head up to Brew Hut. The idea is to carry your skis until there is enough snow, and then skin up the rest. Skis, snowshoes, or a splitboard are all options. We'll sleep in the hut, although your welcome to tent if you want, and then in the morning we can go skiing and head back down to the cars.

As I write this in September, I have no idea what the snow conditions will be like. If we're lucky we might be able to ski almost all the way. If not, we might only get 5 turns on the perennial snowfields up there. That's part of why the event is called a debacle. Some years the trip is true to its name, other years it's fantastic, most years it's both at the same time.

This trip is beginner-friendly. That means there will be experienced people to help beginners. If it's your first time skiing, it won't be easy and the way down will be even harder (Look up type 2 fun in the VOC glossary).  That being said, snowshoes are way more chill option and I am not a certified guide.

Ask lots of questions to make sure you are adequately prepared, especially if you haven't spent much time in the backcountry. The best places to ask questions are the message board thread and during the pre-trip meeting. A good way to start preparing is to check out our list of necessary gear. Most of it can be rented from the VOC and you can also team up with somebody experienced for shared items like stoves.

When signing up as a driver, you will be asked how many people fit in your car.  Please remember to consider that each person has an overnight pack and equipment.

*A note on skis:

AT skis have bindings with a free heel for climbing, but then lock in and perform like regular downhill skis for the descent.

Telemark skis have a free heel for the ascent and descent.

The club rents both, but there are way more telemark skis than AT skis and it is first come first serve.
