Description:

Think you could never combine canoeing, hiking, snowshoeing and skating (potentially skiing) in one trip? Think Again.

Come discover the wonders of Alpine skating in the Pinecone Burke park! The general idea here is to paddle across Pitt lake via widgeon creek to reach the base of Burke Mountain where a canoe access only campground is found. Then we shall begin the ascent up the east side of Burke mountain (using hiking shoes or snowshoes) to Widgeon lake. There, we can spend the day skating on an untouched, beautiful alpine lake and set up a winter camp. Skiing has never been done before in this terrain, and may be absolutely gnarly, but come try if you dare.

*On a side note, anyone with a canoe should volunteer to bring it, as these are much cheaper to use than renting a canoe at pitt lake.

Here is a Video of Famous figure skaters skating on Widgeon lake and the nearby alpine lake to get you hyped:

Trip Expectations:

8:00 - Meet at Pitt Lake parking lot (and pay overnight parking fee of $10). Then faff and get canoes ready

8:30 – Launching canoes in water and begin the paddle across Pitt Lake

~10:00/10:30 – Reach campground and unload packs + Snack break (Leave canoes out of water)

11:00 – Begin ascent up the Widgeon lake hiking trail (Roughly 16km in length)

*Hiking should take roughly 5-8 hours depending on hiking speed.

4:00/ 7:00 - Arrival and Skating/Camp site set up

Next Morning:

Morning Skate/ Exploration/ (Ski?) and Pack up and descend (then convince drivers to stop for hot chocolate/beers before heading home).

Disclaimer:

We will not be aware of what the weather conditions will be at Widgeon lake and therefore we will be unaware of how cleared up the lake will be for skating or if frozen at all given the winter conditions so far. Worst case scenario we will not be able to go skating. However, being surrounded by the beauty of this alpine range should be satisfying enough to get you on this trip!

Second Disclaimer:

This is a less touristy trail and not many have explored this terrain in the winter time, so some knowledge of winter hiking/snowshoeing off the beaten path may be useful, as well as a gps/map and compass incase trail conditions are bad.
