Description:

Want to learn how to hike like a pro? With proper nutrition, efficient use of your muscles, and how to get clean water on the go?

Are you curious about backpacking, but don’t know where to begin?

Join the Canadian Parks & Wilderness Society (CPAWS-BC) on a Intro to Hiking and Backpacking Day Trip! Come meet new friends, share snacks, practice setting up camp, and learn how to take action to protect the wild places you love. This is a day trip so no one needs backpacking gear! I will have my entire kit for everyone to see and set up!

We respectfully acknowledge that this gathering will take place on the unceded, traditional, ancestral and occupied homelands of the Katize, Kwikwetlem, Soowahlie, and Tsawwassen Nations, Seabird Island Band, and the Stó:lō Xwexwilmexw Treaty Association.

The Hike:

Evan’s Peak offers stunning views of the Easternly Mountains near Vancouver! This is a difficult trail! The elevation gain vs km is only slightly less steep than the grouse grind, with some roped steep sections at the top!

This is a weather-dependent trail! We will only go if it is nice! CPAWS-BC will choose a different hike in Golden Ears if the weather looks cloudy or rainy in the mountains (more details to come later).

Important: This hike is rated DIFFICULT - it is a bit more elevation gain as you do on the Grouse Grind, over 4 km (vs 2.5km) - 8 km round trip. Check the reviews for information. We will hike at a pace that many people will find doable! Please let me know if this hike intimidates you and we can hop on a phone call to discuss your prior experience and/or any accessibility concerns. PROPER FOOTWEAR IS A MUST! Stable hiking or trail shoes with a lot of grip on rock and mud!

CPAWS-BC Challenges you to... Try to DIY your snacks & lunch! (As Zero-Waste as possible). We can share tips and challenges we faced while trying to reduce our waste for our trip into the backcountry!

What is CPAWS-BC & why are we doing this?

The Canadian Parks & Wilderness Society - British Columbia (CPAWS-BC) is part of a national charity that has worked to protect an area the size of the Yukon, across Canada, since 1978!

We want to bring people out in the places we love and build a community that is knowledgeable about hiking and is ready and excited to take action to protect the wild places we love.

Can’t make it? You can stay up to date with our work to protect BC’s wilderness via our instagram, facebook, and twitter @cpawsbc.

Hike Logistics:

  • Pick-ups: Location dependent - TBD.

  • Arrive at Golden Ears: 9:30 AM

  • Hike End: ~6:00 PM (6 Hour Hike + Stop at top)

  • Drop-offs: same car groups as pick-ups.

Accessibility: This trail has steep sections, muddy sections, and lots of roots - we have hikes posted that take place on smoother trails on different dates - please let us know if you have an accessibility request and CPAWS can find a solution!

FAQ “I don’t have backpacking gear - that’s why I’m here!”

  • Don’t worry! I will bring my backcountry camping set up and hiking gear and we can all help set it up and I will explain the pros and cons of each of my pieces.

  • You will need to bring your own hiking footwear, appropriate gear (a headlamp and rain/cold appropriate clothing - we will provide a list), and snacks/dinner/water.

CPAWS will provide transportation for 6 people. If there is a lot of interest, we may be able to secure more vehicles for a maximum group size of 14 participants!
