Description:

Glacier school (G1) got cancelled this year due to rain. I think glacier school is a rather important trip to pass knowledge on in the club. Thus, if the weather is reasonable on the weekend of Oct 19/20 we will go visit a glacier. This will be an opportunity to practice/learn the basics of crevasse rescue, go over how to self arrest on steep snow and how to walk in crampons.

I still need to pick a destination and the trip will only happen if the weather looks at least partially reasonable. There is a good chance the glaciers will be covered in a small amount of snow. A small amount of snow makes glacier travel potentially quite dangerous (some of the crevasses may be covered in snow and thus not visible until you are in them). If there is too much snow to venture onto the glaciers, we will still practice these skills in the mountains.

Preference will be given to students who plan to do some club trips in the next year and who want to stay involved in the club. You should also be somewhat experienced with backpacking and hiking - although if you are very keen and reasonably fit we can work around this. Knowledge of anchors and climbing knots are an asset but not essential - we will go over this at the pretrip meeting/dry school.

At the pretrip meeting we will go over the basic knots and rope work. If you have the following items and are able to bring them, that would be great. If you don't or don't know what they are, no worries, we'll make do with what we have as a group for the pretrip:
Climbing harness
Prussiks
Slings
Rope
Carabiners
Pulleys

You can find more information about knots and pulley systems in the pdf: glacier school manual

A more detailed glacier school manual can be found here.
