Description:

Every fall, the subalpine larches in Manning Provincial Park shed their needles, turning a fabulous golden hue. Who is interested in going to see them with me? Warning: I study larch so I will seriously nerd out and you may have to deal with me talking about xanthophylls! You can see some pictures in this past trip report: https://www.ubc-voc.com/2018/10/02/quest-for-the-golden-larches

The plan is to leave Vancouver bright and early Saturday morning and drive ~3 hours to Manning. Then we'll hike up to the larch meadows, about 15 km, or 20 k to the summit of Mt. Frosty, and 1150 elevation gain. If there are folks who would like to camp overnight, there is camping at Frosty Creek, 7 km, or car camping options. I will probably camp as I may be driving to Vernon on Sunday. Saturday evening or Sunday, we'll head down and drive back to Vancouver. Since this is early October, plenty of layers and microspikes may be helpful.

While this is beginner-friendly, you should be comfortable with at least one long day of hiking with substantial elevation gain and, if camping, prepared for cold temperatures.
