Description:

Please check out the club’s new guidelines prior to signing up for this or any trip! We want to make sure everyone stays safe while still getting outdoors.

Let's celebrate Thanksgiving in style at Garibaldi Lake over the long weekend! My co-leader Beth and I have three tent pads reserved at the lake. This'll be a great chance to give thanks for an amazing summer and welcome in the fall season in a spectacular setting.

About Garibaldi Lake

This stunning alpine lake is the centerpiece of Garibaldi Provincial Park. It's a 9 km hike in, with almost 1000 m of elevation gain, all on good trail. Since it's the shoulder season we should be prepared for any kind of conditions - it could be sunny or raining or snowing (probably some combination of all of those). So I would consider this trip as being at the very least moderately difficult, thus some backpacking experience in such conditions is necessary to go on the trip.

Trip Plan

We'll leave the city fairly early on Saturday morning, making sure we have plenty of time to hike and get camp set up during the daylight. On Sunday we will have tons of options for day hiking, including Panorama Ridge, the Black Tusk, and/or Mount Price. On Monday we can do a quick hike or just sleep in and then hike out and head back to town.

If the weather ends up being good, ideally I'd like to do as much as possible, including Panorama Ridge and scrambling up to the lower summit of the Tusk on Sunday. The Tusk would require experience with up to 4th class scrambling and very loose rock - helmets and extreme care are mandatory. But we'll see how the weather looks and make a call before the trip, plus anyone who doesn't feel comfortable scrambling is absolutely free to return to the lake or find some other hike to do.

Trip Logistics/Costs

We have three tent pads per night reserved at the lake, so if we fit two tents per pad that'll be a total of 6 people. If there are any folks joining from the same household that can share a tent, we could increase that a bit (though I believe BC Parks adds a small fee when changing the reservation). Total costs for the trip are as follows:

Permits: $26.30 each

Gas: $15-20 each

Any Questions?

Feel free to contact me ([email protected]) or Beth Roskilly ([email protected]) if you have any questions leading up to the trip. I'll send out an email with a zoom link early next week before the pre-trip to everyone who's signed up.

Note: Since I've been getting a fair amount of emails from folks who seem new-ish to the club/UBC inquiring about this and other trips - just wanted to comment that there is rarely room for non-members on trips like this! If you're interested, you'll need to join the club (I promise it's worth it!!) and sign up. The people who are on the sign-up sheet get priority and I'm not super keen on trying to organize with others as it's just more work on my end, plus it isn't fair to those who are members.
