The iconic road cycling challenge is back! The Festive 500 is an annual Christmastime road cycling endeavour organized by snob cycling brand Rapha, wherein you try to ride 500 kms between Dec 24-31. Since travel and skiing are a bit limited this year and road cycling is pretty good for social distancing, it might be a good year to mount an attempt. If you finish it you even get a small badge with good graphic design. Is it as great as an epic trip somewhere far north? Maybe not, but cycling in the cold is exhilarating in its own right and hell, it's an event that's not on Zoom.
I'll be trying this year. The challenge happens on the cycling app Strava - if you have any questions, feel free to send me a message. If there's enough interest from other VOCers, I'll even form a "VOC CC" on Strava so we can encourage each other. If 500 km sounds far - it is, but it's also quite doable regardless of familiarity with cycling. The trick to cycling longer distances is just not stopping (& for me the trick to finishing this challenge will be not getting bored and choosing to make Christmas cookies instead).
