Description:

Want to test your trail legs while staying local? Join me for an early-season traverse of the North Shore! The Baden Powell Trail is the first big hike I did after moving to Vancouver, and it hasn’t disappointed me since.

The route for this trip can be found here: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/map-may-25-08-12-am-8e54d6b. We’ll start at 7am from the trailhead next to the ferry tollbooth at Horseshoe Bay. The trail is well-marked/maintained, but also quite hilly with uneven footing throughout. I will be attempting the full ~45km route, but there are good stopping points at ~20km, ~30km, and ~35km. If you think 45km days are for crazy people (and you might be right), feel free to join for just the first 20 or 30km.

This trip is not a race, and as such we will walk/shuffle/run/gallop at a pace that is comfortable for the whole group. However, participants should be aware that an average pace of >4km/hr will give us the best chance to complete the route. Participants should also note that there could be as much as 10km of non-technical snow travel toward the beginning of the route (the steep sections under Eagle Bluffs are happily snow-free). A recent reconnaissance of the Cypress Bowl area featured a minimal but nonzero amount of postholing.

Required gear: footwear suitable for hiking/jogging on uneven terrain and wet snow; food and water to last all day; extra layers; headlamp; sunglasses; basic first-aid stuff.

Transportation will be organized at the individual level in order to comply with health regulations. I’ve heard that public transportation can be useful for point-to-point trips.

Please contact me with any questions/concerns/criticisms:)
