Description:

Last year I led a trip out to Rampart Ponds in September and we got smoked out by the forest fires burning in the States. Hopefully this year will be different, as this is a spectacular area deep in the wilderness of Garibaldi Provincial Park when the air is breathable. The hike will take us past Elfin Lakes, where we can take a dip in the cold waters at lunchtime; then up around the flanks of the Opal Cone, a large cinder cone volcano near Mount Garibaldi. We should have plenty of time to summit Opal Cone, which we passed on last year amid the thick smoke... Mamquam Lake is also a great little side trip in the area.

The hike in is about 22km each way, not counting any side trips. Thus this trip is not very beginner friendly and some backpacking experience is required. I've booked three tent pads, each of which can fit two 2-person tents. By August I expect tent sharing will be a thing again - and it will be necessary to reach full capacity for this trip - but of course the plan will have to change a bit if that's not possible. If we do reach full capacity then the permit cost will be $11.50 per person, which I must receive before the trip to confirm someone as 'going'.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions!
